Box Alarm fire in Burbank, 7-28-16

This from Eric Haak:

The Burbank Fire Department had a house fire just before 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (7/28).  A mayday was called and the alarm was elevated to a Mabas Box.  I arrived 10 minutes after the mayday to give you an idea of conditions.  There were no firefighters injured during the incident and officially, I did not hear the reason for the mayday.  As you can see, the fire was pretty much out but I thought I would submit some images anyway.

Working fire in Bedford Park, 7-27-16

This from Eric Haak:

Just before 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday (7/27), the Village of Bedford Park had a fire at the Midway Windows and Doors warehouse. It looked as if there was an exterior fire that burned through the exterior metal clad wall and ignited interior stock and shelving. It also appeared that the exterior fire was being fueled possibly by some type of petroleum product. Foam was used to eventually extinguish the exterior fire which flared up several times. It is hard to see in the images, but the initial fire must have been very intense as it appeared that the fire was hot enough to cause the metal sheeting to fail which allowed fire to enter the structure. This is all speculation based on what I witnessed and should not be taken as information that was confirmed.

Carpentersville Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

After months of negotiating, the Carpentersville firefighters union and village officials have reached a new collective bargaining agreement extending through 2019.

The village board and the Carpentersville Professional Firefighters Union, IAFF Local 4790, voted this month to ratify the contract, which is retroactive to May 1. Negotiations had been ongoing since February, and the two parties were able to reach an agreement without arbitration.

The deal includes a 1.75 percent wage increase for the first eight months and a 2.25 percent raise in 2017. Mirroring a recent contract with Carpentersville police officers, firefighters’ salaries for 2018 and 2019 have not yet been determined and will be negotiated toward the end of 2017.

The union also agreed to a reduced pay rate for off-duty firefighters performing certain activities that fall outside the scope of fighting fires and responding to calls, union President Rick Nieves said. Examples include off-duty meetings, CPR instructional courses, maintenance work and public education — activities that make up about 20 percent of the department’s overtime, … which is expected to save the village roughly $11,496 in overtime costs

The contract also includes an established work schedule of 24 hours on-duty and 48 hours off-duty, and firefighters’ spouses are now included in an outcome-based incentive wellness program. The agreement also prohibits firefighters from wearing shorts when they’re not on personal time.

Of interest … Lincolnshire Police Explorer Post

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Before placing at a the National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference in Arizona, members of the Lincolnshire Police Explorer Post put their law enforcement training to work after coming across an emergency situation while on their way to the competition. Lincolnshire Patrol Sgt. Jamie Watson was proud of how his three students handled a motorcycle crash, involving an unresponsive rider.

After flying from Chicago to Phoenix, Watson was driving the Explorers to Flagstaff. About 55 miles away from Phoenix, they came around a bend in a mountain pass to discover a motorcycle crash.

The Explorers decided to stop after Watson noticed that first responders firefighters and EMS personnel had not yet arrived on the scene. In the southbound lane, a motorcycle was strewn across a lane of traffic and the rider was lying motionless about 15 feet away.

When an ambulance arrived, emergency responders EMS personnel moved the cyclist to a nearby exit, where a helicopter rushed him to a hospital.

News of the post’s actions along I-17 made its way to many participants at the national conference, where Watson fielded questions about the Lincolnshire post’s response to the crash.

The small Lincolnshire group ultimately captured two second-place finishes out of five events during the national competition. With three of the group’s 12 members participating, the Lincolnshire post took second place in the traffic stops and officer-down simulations — the latter involved an officer being hit by passing a car, according to Watson.

The Exploring program is similar to the Boy Scouts but is focused on training both male and female students in a career field. This year, the Lincolnshire group has members from Deerfield, Arlington Heights, Mundelein, and Buffalo Grove.

Carol Stream Fire District news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Carol Stream firefighter-paramedics will receive 2.5 percent annual salary increases under a tentative three-year contract agreement union members have ratified, which also would give lieutenants 2.75 percent pay raises in each year of the deal, retroactive to June 1.

Carol Stream Fire Protection District trustees are expected to approve the proposed contract on Aug. 8.

Earlier this month, 41 of the union’s 46 members voted in favor of ratifying the agreement, said Lt. Rick Bonk, president of the Carol Stream Firefighters Association Local 3192.  Bonk called the proposed contract a fair agreement that also would increase an education allowance — by $500 to $1,500 — for training seminars and classes.

Negotiations began in March and a federal mediator later facilitated a bargaining session in early July that got the bulk of economic issues settled.

The board also signed a three-year contract with newly appointed Fire Chief Bob Hoff that awards a $135,000 base salary. Each year of the agreement, starting next June, trustees will review his pay and consider adjustments.
