If the contract has a manpower agreement, the union would have to agree to any changes. If the Village decided on its own that they are going to cut manpower levels lower than the contract stipulates, then a grievance could be filed against the Village. That could lead to arbitration or legal battle. I was wondering if this was the case.

I’m going to guess the union didn’t agree to this, but I’m also guessing that it doesn’t matter what the union thinks. Staffing would look quite a bit different if it were up to the unions, not the politicians. I highly doubt that any union would agree to a situation that essentially puts their people out of work like this one does.

The yet to arrive mini squad will be utilized on EMS assistance in station 7’s district as a jump company from Truck/ Quint 7 due to the elimination of a full time Engine 7 and to not put excessive wear on the tower.
Elk Grove will run with 3 Engine’s, A Quint/tower, 3 Ambo’s and a BC with 19 men. When fully staffed at 21 (never) they staff Engine 7.
I assume the union agreed to this?

0.03–What you said about Engine 7 being being gone after the new tower/quint goes in service is not true because that is what I kind of thought too. On the other recent post about this topic, I was wondering the same thing, so I came up with a possible scenario, but I was quickly corrected.
Engine 7 will still be at Station 7. When the new rig is OOS, and they have to bring the reserve tower up, they will be running the engine because the reserve tower does not have a pump. Not having first hand knowledge of the whole situation, I don’t how the whole manning of rigs will work.

I get it. What I understood is that the old tower being a dry truck management didn’t want to run a dry truck, so they just took it out of service and or switched it with the quint. Then the village started playing games with manning and engine 7 isn’t always staffed. I think it’s safe to say the writing is on the wall and once the new tower is in service the old tower will be sold and when the new tower goes down for repair they will use the quint. And engine 7 will be taken out of service when the new tower goes in service because it will have a pump and water on it, so no need for the engine anymore in managements eye. Thus also reducing overall shift manning too because it will be one less fire company to staff. Sad thing is EGV has the money to staff engine 7 and a truck company but chooses not to, along with wasting taxpayers money on buying a piece of equipment that since management didn’t like the idea of it being a dry truck they just make it a reserve unit.

When it comes to buying a rig, You can only get so much on a “Stock” rig. It is how it is. A stock rig saves a dept some thousands when they buy it. Also the comment about it having a pump. Most departments need a pump on their ladder truck to keep there ISO rating where it’s at or to better it. Nice Job to the fella’s @ Elk Grove, rig looks good and it will serve them well.

Looks really nice. Although I don’t understand how anyone has room for everything they need on a truck with that pump, water tank, and hose in the way and taking up so much space. You can’t possibly carry everything you need with so little space. Too bad Elk Grove’s new chief decided to go with a tower with a pump. Seems like Elk Grove got along just fine for many years without the “benefit” of a pump on their truck.

There is a pump on this rig because they took engine company 7 out of service. When engine 7 went out of service that left that area without an apparatus that could pump. So what they did in between was move quint 8 to engine 7’s house and it became quint 7 and engine 7 went to 8’s and became engine 8. So now the department has lost. Fire company and the manning that went with it.

Engine 7 is still at 7, it was never moved. It runs 8a-4p Mon-Thurs and when shift manning is at 21. Minimum now is 19.
Engine 8 is a 2yr old Pierce Quantum PUC. The old Quint 8 is called Trk 7. Tower 7 is in reserve. The new Tower will be called Quint 7.

And when the new tower or quint or whatever they want to call it goes in service you can say good bye to engine 7.
#12 by James on June 7, 2015 - 5:14 PM
Engine 7 is already gone, manpower has been reduced. OT personnel are used from 8a-4p Mon-Thurs to run E7 because of the training. If there is ever a day at 22 then E7 runs full time.

The required ISO and NFPA equipment will fit perfect on the new rig. It’s when you add all the crap that you really don’t need that you run into space issues. The basics for fires (tools and saws) and extrication equipment will fit just fine.
