Controversial Fire Chief Theresa Everett will be replaced in a ceremony … sources tell the Gazette. Communications Director Chelsea Whittington informed the Gazette that the mayor’s office would not comment on upcoming personnel changes but sources close within the department say that long time Gary Firefighter Paul Bradley will be named to the top post.
Everett has been controversial since her appointment to the position in 2012. Firefighers stated privately that they believed Everett’s ties to Freeman-Wilson weighed more in her appointment than her qualifications. Freeman-Wilson and Everett are both members of the same sorority. Everett was a finalist for a position with the Fulton County, Georgia Fire Department in 2013. Everett’s future plans were not known at the time of this article.

Excerpts from the Daily Herald:
[a] house was unoccupied when fire broke out before midnight on Thursday, authorities said. … the homeowner … returned to his house around 2 a.m. to see it up in flames.
Firefighters remained outside the house on the 800 block of North Kaspar Avenue throughout much of Friday, continually putting out hot spots as they flared up. By Friday night, firefighters said, fire operations ceased, and the building was torn down.
Without describing the contents, Arlington Heights Fire Department officials said a “high fire content load” inside the two-story, single-family home kept the fire burning long after the first firefighting crews arrived on scene about 11:45 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities said fire was coming through the roof and first- and second-floor windows when they arrived. But firefighters were unable to make entry into the house due to the excessive flames and heat.
The below-zero overnight temperatures also presented a challenge for [firefighters], who were unable to use the nearest hydrant because it was frozen. After accessing a working hydrant some 300 feet away, firefighters … were able to contain the blaze without it spreading to nearby houses, officials said.

I stopped by East Chicago’s house fire after finishing a job in Whiting. They were already in overhaul, but there was still some light smoke showing. 1200 block of W. 151st st. Ironically, station 2 was less than 500 feet away from this house.-Brad S.

Structural/Vehicle Fires – Cancer
Cancer is a continuing concern among many workers. NIOSH is studying whether fire fighters are at risk as a result of exposure to chemicals and materials while doing their job. Learn more about our fire fighter cancer study. This page also lists our other publications that relate to cancer among fire fighters.
From a recent study: Exposure–response relationships for select cancer and non-cancer health outcomes in a cohort of US firefighters from San Francisco, Chicago and Philadelphia 1950–2009
ABSTRACT
Objectives: To examine exposure–response relationships between surrogates of firefighting exposure and select outcomes among previously studied US career firefighters. Methods: Eight cancer and four non-cancer outcomes were examined using conditional logistic regression. Incidence density sampling was used to match each case to 200 controls on attained age. Days accrued in firefighting assignments (exposed-days), run totals (fire- runs) and run times (fire-hours) were used as exposure surrogates. HRs comparing 75th and 25th centiles of lagged cumulative exposures were calculated using loglinear, linear, log-quadratic, power and restricted cubic spline general relative risk models. Piecewise constant models were used to examine risk differences by time since exposure, age at exposure and calendar period.
Results: Among 19 309 male firefighters eligible for the study, there were 1333 cancer deaths and 2609 cancer incidence cases. Significant positive associations between fire-hours and lung cancer mortality and incidence were evident. A similar relation between leukaemia mortality and fire-runs was also found. The lung cancer associations were nearly linear in cumulative exposure, while the association with leukaemia mortality was attenuated at higher exposure levels and greater for recent exposures. Significant negative associations were evident for the exposure surrogates and colorectal and prostate cancers, suggesting a healthy worker survivor effect possibly enhanced by medical screening.
Conclusions: Lung cancer and leukaemia mortality risks were modestly increasing with firefighter exposures. These findings add to evidence of a causal association between firefighting and cancer. Nevertheless, small effects merit cautious interpretation. We plan to continue to follow the occurrence of disease and injury in this cohort.
