Does Hoffman Estates have any plans to replace any more engines in the next few years?

Sent this before. Didn’t go through. Seems to run in cycles. E-One was everyones favorite for a while. (Thank God they got over that one) then for awhile in the NW suburbs Pierce could do no wrong. I still believe the Arrow to be one of the most solid pumpers made. Was my favorite. After Roger died, things seemed to change. Pierce messed up on Hoffmans squad. They came in figuring it would be a walk in the park and didn’t do their homework. Rep came in with a stock print and kept telling us “Well, we can make that change later on.” Marion’s rep was prepared and bent over backwards to make things happen. The distance to the 2 shops is more or less the same. Pierce does have a better bar.

Seems to go in cycles. Way back when, E-One had the inside track for everything. Thank God, that went away. Then Pierce could do no wrong. We liked them. I think we bid to spec pretty much. There were a couple things we wanted that they never thought of and they added them to their offerings. I still think, pound for pound, the Arrows were best rig around. After Roger died, as far as sales, they got complacent. The reason HE went Marion, for the squad, was because Pierce tried “phoning it in’, figuring they were a shoo in. Came in with a stock print, and saying, don’t worry, we can make changes. Boy were they shocked. Pierce and Marion are about the same distance. Pierce does have a better bar.

RE: Pierce, Drew, I’m surprised that is the answer you got in 2000 as I have dealt with Pierce and we have had nothing but what do we want. Yes, they all have base models (Chassis/cab selection) but I have found nothing but customization. As far as price, it all comes down “to the bells & whistles” one picks. A Pierce engine can run $600K plus or $350-400k. All depends on how much crap is put on it! Same with ANY manufacturer.
As far as the drive, to Appleton, it’s 4 hours from the Chicagoland area without delays. I agree about the other co’s being close and I do think location especially for major service or major warranty issues is important for any manufacturer!

Maybe the photo has been replaced, but I felt the photo was clear on my desktop running in high resolution.
We appreciate your contribution!

As a side note, as the photographer I ask that you please contact me before posting my photos if a direct link is not included. I will allow this one to stay, and I have put photos up on this site before and am a daily reader, but I would like to keep everything running as optimal as possible! I significantly reduce the quality of images I upload to facebook, so if I would have been contacted I could have sent something of far better quality over for this site to host!

Very good looking rig!

Ferrara also builds a very nice rig. Pierce has a tendency to out price themselves and like what Drew mentioned. “Here is our product, deal with it”

I cant speak for Hoffman Estates or any other FD but I will speak for Prospect Heights. In 2000 when we went conducted an RFP for a new pumper Pierce’s response was basically “here’s our standard rig and some options you can pick from.” We had conducted a pre-RFP conference where we detailed our specific needs and wants. Alexis and Saulsbury (who had recently been purchased by E-One) were very receptive and helpful. Alexis won that RFP based solely on cost and geography (being in IL allowed us to make trips to the factory). I’m sure we would have been happy with the Saulsbury but it was $40K more and a plane ride away.
In that same time period I conducted an RFP for MABAS Division 3 for the purchase of two 20-ft squads, one for TRT and one for Haz Mat. Marion was very receptive and easy to work with.
The main thing I see going for both Alexis and Marion is they are a half-day’s drive from the Chicago area, you get to deal with the factory and owners, and every rig is a custom rig so your specific needs are no big deal to them.

Surprising that after all these years that hoffman estates has had pierce units that they made a switch to ferrara and to marion for the squad… Just wondering why?

Hoffman rigs have had that stripe, for quite a while. The “Metra” striping is new.

I second that.

Might just be me, but I’m seeing a lot more rigs with the black stripe and similar scheme as this unit.
Sharp. I like it.
