Glenview to go ahead with plans for new fire station

The Glenview Announcements has an article on the updated progress of the new headquarters fire station to be built for the Glenview Fire Department.

Glenview officials on Wednesday approved the larger of two designs for a new downtown fire station headquarters.

Trustees asked architects to design a facility with three vehicle bays and nine firefighter rest bunks for $6.3 million. The original plan was for 2 ½ bays and six bunks for future expansion at $5.6 million.

Also, a peaked roof to hide mechanical equipment and a tower to comply with downtown designs were added to the plan.

“Expanding could cost a lot more later. I’m comfortable with (Fire Chief Wayne Globerger’s) need for a third bay,” Britton said.

Trustees also approved design appearances, such as banded-stone exterior facades, pilasters and a mid-building tower.

“The fire station should compliment other buildings in the area. It’s a long-term, and should be a marquee and held to the same standards as other contracted buildings,” Trustee Michael Jenny said. In May, trustees voted to support a new fire station and headquarters next to Village Hall on Waukegan Road.

In December 2012, the Village Board approved a plan to demolish and redevelop the old fire station headquarters at 1815 Glenview Road into a four-story structure that includes 142 rentals with first-floor retail storefronts.

Elk Grove Village FD history

A reader has asked for information and specs corresponding to the 1970s series Oshkosh/Pierce/Snorkel that saw service in Elk Grove Village.

thanks Scott for supplying the photo

The following is a reprint from a local newspaper when the unit was delivered:

Some will notice that;

  • the chassis is indicated to be from FWD, but the cab appears to match the Oshkosh units which saw service in Chicago.
  • the year is not indicated
  • there’s no mention of a water tank

3 dead after Arlington Heights house fire 11-6-13 (update)

The Chicago Tribune has an article identifying the deceased from the Arlington Heights fire on Wednesday.

Authorities said today that arson has been ruled out in the deaths of an elderly disabled woman, her live-in caregiver and the caregiver’s daughter, all three of whom died in an Arlington Heights house fire Wednesday. Officials said the fire started in the first-floor kitchen near the back of a property in the 300 block of South Dunton Avenue.

Investigators found a smoke detector with no batteries in it on the second floor of the home belonging to Doris Miller, 93, said Arlington Heights police Cmdr. Mike Hernandez. [He] also said no other smoke detectors were found in the house.

Tetiana Krych, 62, was Miller’s live-in caregiver and Krych’s daughter, Svitlana Kandelis, 40, of the 1500 block of Tahoe Circle in Wheeling, was visiting for the night, said Hernandez. All three women were pronounced dead at the scene in what has been ruled an accidental fire, Hernandez said. The victims died of smoke inhalation and “thermal injuries,” including tissue burns and heat-related injuries, he said.

The most extensive damage was to the back of the three-bedroom house. One corner of the second floor collapsed just as firefighters got to the scene, said Fire Chief Glenn Ericksen.

[Firefighters] first spotted Miller in a downstairs bedroom before removing her through a window. Krych was found in the downstairs dining room area and Kandelis was found near the front entrance, Hernandez said.

“A lot of people try to do many things (in a fire),” he said. “I would like to think so, that (Kandelis) was trying to make her way through the front door, but that’s speculation.” Miller was physically immobile and did not have any family nearby.

The exact cause of the kitchen fire hasn’t been determined, but arson and foul play have been ruled out, officials said.

Prospect Heights MVA with entrapment 11-7-13

This from Larry Shapiro:

Prospect Heights had a three ambulance response to an MVA on Schoenbeck Road at Willow Road just before 6PM. They found a Nissan SUV on it’s side with two unbelted occupants precariously positioned inside. They removed the windshield and the rear tailgate to facilitate removal of the victims. Two were transported and the third ambulance was returned.

I arrived a bit late, just as they had finished removing the 2nd patient. Here are some shots of the scene and there are more on my site HERE.
