Orland FPD to remodel Station 2

The Orland Fire Protection District is about to begin remodeling their station #2.

Station 2, located at 151st & 80th Avenue, was originally built in 1980. The station was commissioned to accommodate the volunteer / POC personnel, and consisted of one bay and an office / kitchen / day area. It was not intended for full-time housing / response.

As the need for service expanded, so did Station 2’s intended use with many updates being done through the years to accommodate for overnight stay and 24-hour operation. New bays were added and the kitchen/day area had been expanded as well. Because Station 2 has been reconfigured and added onto so many times, to bring the station to current code and use would simply be a short-term solution. Therefore, the Orland Fire Protection District Board of Trustees has approved a full and complete remodel of Station 2 at the June 2013 Board of Trustees’ meeting.

The project is getting underway this fall 2013, and is expected to take approximately 8 weeks.

Barrington Fire District offers to hire laid off firefighters

The Daily Herald has an article about the Barrington & Countryside FPD offering to hire all 19 pf the laid off Barrington firefighters.

The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District will offer jobs to all 19 firefighters to be laid off by the village of Barrington on Jan. 1 at their current union-level salaries and earned vacation time.

But these firefighters have to take advantage of their preferred status by applying before Aug. 31.

“We know how valuable these employees are,” fire district President Tom Rowan said. “We helped to train them.”

What the fire district won’t offer — at least not immediately — are the pension plans these firefighters have had as members of the Barrington Fire Department’s union. The employees will start 401(k) plans instead.

The finalization of the fire district’s 2014 staffing plan Monday came one week after the village of Barrington did the same.

Both agencies are preparing to end the long-running contract in which the village provided staffing for the 48-square-mile fire district just beyond its borders.

The fire district will employ an increased staff of 34, largely through private contractor Paramedic Services of Illinois. District trustees have been working with the firm to ensure that Barrington’s laid-off firefighters can be hired at their current salaries.

Yet to come is the division of the equipment the agencies co-own, as well as determination of the exact nature of their cooperation after Jan. 1.

Fire district trustees are skeptical of the automatic-aid agreement Barrington is proposing that would ask both agencies to take primary responsibility for calls closest to their respective stations, regardless of which jurisdiction they’re actually in.

Fire district trustees say they want to be assured they’re getting roughly as much help as they’re giving.

Barrington village officials say firefighters based in the village have responded to calls in the district about 2.5 times as often as the reverse over the last four years.

But fire district Trustee Tom Long said the staffing changes to be implemented on Jan. 1 make any such historical data irrelevant.

While the fire district’s stations in Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington are currently staffed by three people each, in 2014 they each will have a full crew of five or six at all times, Long said.

McHenry FPD updates

Karl Klotz, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro visited all five stations of the McHenry Township FPD last week to update the site. In addition to new units, this is one of many area departments that is in the process of renumbering apparatus.

Among the new and updated units photographed;  there were three ambulances, two engines, two tenders, and a new boat.

  • McHenry went from a one tender department to a three tender department with a tender in all but the downtown station. The new twin 3,500-gallon tenders were built by US Tanker on IHC 7500 chassis with extended cabs.
  • Tender 1272 is at Station 2, and Tender 1274 is at Station 4.

Two Pierce engines have been put into service since our last update and one was moved. The new engines are on the Impel XM chassis instead of the Velocity.

  • These are assigned as Engine 41 at Station 1 and Engine 43 at Station 3.
  • Engine 44 at Station 4 was formerly Engine 10 at Station 1.
  • There are two more engines on order, each coming in six month intervals.

  • Another new ambulance is a 2012 Type I AEV at Station 1, running as Ambulance 51.
  • Ambulance 52 at Station 2 is a 2010 Osage Type I that has also been added since our last update.

Roberts Park updates

This from Martin Nowak:

“Staff Car – Chief Ketchen outlined the draft budget includes the replacement of one staff car this coming fiscal year. Chief’s intent is to sell the 2003 Crown Victoria, and move the Deputy Chief’s vehicle into the staff fleet. Permission granted by the Board to move forward with the purchase of a new vehicle for the Deputy Chief.  Ambulance Re-Chassis – Chief Ketchen proposed the replacement of the chassis on Ambulance 32. The 2009 ambulance has been plagued with problems since its purchase. The preliminary estimate is $62,000.

A motion was made by Trustee Lorenz to proceed with the re-chassis of Ambulance 32, with fees not to exceed $70,000.00.” http://www.rpfpd.org/content/minutes/file/Minutes%20May%2014%2C%202013%20approved.pdf

Car Replacement – Having been given permission by the Board to replace the Deputy Chief’s vehicle, Chief initially indicated that we would sell the 2003 Crown Victoria. After some consideration, Chief would like to evaluate the Crown Vic and the 2005 Impala to determine which car we should keep to best serve the District’s interests. On Site Refueling – Chief submitted a proposal from Palatine Oil to install on site Diesel and Gasoline pumps. The only costs associated with installation would be to run electricity to the site and install a protective barrier around the tanks. No installation or permit fees are associated with the project. Permission granted from the Board to move forward. http://www.rpfpd.org/content/minutes/file/Minutes%20June%2011%2C%202013%20approved.pdf

Rolling Meadows researches moving Station 15

The Daily Herald has an article about the Village of Rolling Meadows investigating the relocation of the downtown fire station:

Rolling Meadows’ downtown fire station could be moved to better serve residents of the south and southeast parts of the city, the city council indicated Tuesday night.

Reacting to a consultant’s report that the station should be moved and the fact that the fire department building at Kirchoff Road and Meadows Drive is considered badly in need of repair, aldermen directed Chief Scott Franzgrote to bring ideas for where to build a new station.

The south and southeast parts of the city have more calls for service than the north side, the report said.

The council also reiterated on a 5-2 straw poll the decision from years ago to reject building a third fire station, saying the community could not afford it. The city’s second station is on Meacham Road south of Kirchoff Road.

The council was closely divided on whether to build the new station on the site of an equally decrepit old public works building at Central Road and Barker Avenue, as recommended by the consultants. That building is used for storage.

The council also rejected a recommendation to add an ambulance and six paramedic-firefighters to the department.
