Nice pic, Josh. Those doors do a great job of making an otherwise dull architectural firehouse look good. Hats off to the folks that did the painting, too.

@ Paul Bell-
West side & South side are the busiest for fire activity. If you are going to be staying Downtown, Engine 42’s house (55 E. Illinois Street) is a good place to visit. It is a busy house & has each type of rig the CFD uses except Haz-Mat (Engine, Truck, Squad, Ambulance & Command Van).
Welcome to Chicago in advance & enjoy your trip!

Paul,
Last I heard the busiest engine company in the city was engine 95 at 4001 W. West End. You might also have luck with engine 117 at 4900 W. Chicago. Those houses also have two of the busiest ambulances in the city. The problem with visiting them is that they aren’t in great neighborhoods, so you might not be very safe in those areas.
You may want to look into visiting somewhere like engine 83 at 1200 W. Wilson. They’re quite busy, catch a fair amount of fires, and it’s in a slightly nicer neighborhood. That house also has a truck (that is extremely busy as well) and ambulance at it if you’re interested in checking out different types of apparatus.
I’m sure others with much more knowledge than I have can shed more light on this than I can, I just wanted to give you a starting point. Enjoy your visit, September is an awesome time to be in Chicago.

To Chris r – I think that you simply can’t imagine that somebody could go out and try to document the CFD houses. There are lots of people looking at the CFD photos on this site, so I think it makes a good sense if somebody keeps all the pics updated. On top of that it’s also about preserving the CFD history for the future. I’d be only glad if all the stuff (even such details like the apparatus door or facades of the houses) would be so well documented all the way back to 1858. If you think you’re able to absorb all this unbelievable stuff then 3x hurrah!:)

Those companies did a fantastic job on that. I can only imagine it gives the house something to be proud of.

I always have the backs of my brothers. Firefighter or not, we all are brothers here. I took my time to update the Roberts Park St.1 picture months ago when they repainted the doors. If a picture isn’t updated, how do people know how the station looks today? Josh, thanks for the update.

Josh–Thanks for taking time to update pictures of firehouses throughout the area. I know you have a life because if you did not, you would have nothing better to do than surf blogs and criticize what people do with their time.

Buddy chill out, the picture on the site is an old one, I meant for it to be updated. If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything. By the way I do have a life.

@Chris R.–Chris the men and women of Engine Co. 19, Truck Co. 11 and Ambulance Co. 4 took time on their own to repaint the doors and show company pride and tradition. If Josh wants to submit a photo of the work, I’m glad he did. Everyone has different interests when it comes to this hobby, some guys like apparatus, some guys like radios, and some guys like firehouses. To each his own, but you have no right to say something negative about someone else’s interests because I know you wouldn’t want them or anyone else to say anything about the things you like. Josh thank you for posting this and the other firehouse updates.
