Gary Fire Department history

This from Wayne Stuart for #TBT:

In the early 70’s the GFD took over the EMS transport service. Prior to that the local funeral homes handled all ambulance transports. The original ambulances were donated from the funeral homes. The FD started the EMS service with 4 ambulances, two BLS and two ALS. This was the first custom ambulance to be put in service. It was a 1974 Dodge/ National. It was assigned to Medic 501 an ALS ambulance at Station 1.

Where are they now … LaGrange

This from Martin Nowak:

Months ago I ran into the owner of this former ambulance. He told me it came from La Grange Fire Department. After serving the fire department, it moved over to the police department and then was sold at a public auction. The owner said he was thinking of working on it. Recently saw this rig and was able to take pictures. Thanks to Bill Friedrich for finding his photo. 1970’s Chevy Suburban.

The second department in MABAS Division 27 has been added. South Chicago Heights, a single station department that covers 1.5 square miles operates two ambulances and two engines. Ambulances are from Wheeled Coach and Osage. Engines are from Crimson and American LaFrance (before it was bought by Freightliner). This is one of the few departments in the area operating a Type II style ambulance. Images were provided by Jack Connors.
