As seen around … Elgin

This from Mike Maida:

On Tuesday morning, I happened to see the Elgin Fire Department setting up for what appeared to be a dive rescue drill at the lake behind Sherman Hospital.  Photos included show the 2015 E-One, Engine 5, Engine 3, a Seagrave, and Medic 1.  Engine 5 has a bell on it that came from their previous rig, a 2001 KME.

Enjoy!

Steve Redick was with friends who stopped by Wirfs Industries in McHenry this week and photographed two interesting units that were in for service.

The South Elgin & Countryside FPD took delivery in 2009 of a 100′ mid-mount tower ladder by Crimson on a Spartan chassis with a Gladiator Classic cab.

South Elgin orders new engine

A reader submitted the following information:

South Elgin Fire Protection District has ordered a new Rosenbauer engine. This is a similar spec to the Spartan/Crimson engine in South Elgin's fleet. The new engine will replace the current Pierce Lance used as Engine 22. Alexis, Rosenbauer, and Spartan ERV submitted bids. South Elgin will phase out it's Seagrave H-cab that has been used as a reserve. South Elgin FPD expects to take delivery in a year.

South Elgin fire looking to Elgin for dispatch

The Courier-News has an article describing a proposed change in dispatch services for police and fire in South Elgin.

Village officials say they have little concern if the South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District uses a dispatch center different from the one used by the South Elgin Police Department.

Facing a $1 million-plus upgrade for its existing dispatch center at the Village Hall, the Police Department is in negotiations to move dispatching services to KaneComm-911, Kane County’s dispatch center. KaneComm also has agreed to hire South Elgin’s existing dispatch staff, officials said.

The Fire Protection District, however, is looking to move its dispatch operations to Elgin later this spring. Elgin’s dispatch center is at the Elgin Police Department.

Right now, Jones said, the fire district pays the village for its dispatch services — $76,900 a year. When determining which dispatch center to move to, South Elgin took the elimination of that payment into account, he said.

Elgin’s proposal would cost the fire district $51,000 a year, Cluchey said. “I believe that there would be a savings. However, that savings will be put into some technology, like mobile data terminals. Will that become a wash? We don’t know that yet.”

No contracts have been signed. However, the South Elgin & Countryside board has given the fire district’s management, including Cluchey, the green light to pursue a contract, he said.

South Elgin 2nd Alarm 1-20-11

South Elgin had a house fire on Thursday at 10N917 Gale Street in Elgin Township (Kane County). The fire was apparently blamed on a bird’s nest which ignited and sent fire into the attic of the home. It was a 15-degree day that felt like 5 degrees with the wind.

Scott Peterson submitted several shots from the scene after the fire was brought under control.

From The Courier-News:

According to preliminary reports, firefighters were called to the home just after 9:30 a.m. by the home’s two occupants. Firefighters found fire in a wall and a deep-seated fire in the attic, with flames coming out of windows on both sides of the structure. Reports stated that the home actually had multiple attic units as a result of remodeling projects and the fire had spread among them.

The Courier-News has an article about the fire HERE.

Departments that responded to provide mutual aid included Elgin, Pingree Grove, Elburn, Bartlett, Hanover Park, and West Dundee.
