Lake Zurich 3-Alarm Fire on 11-4-10

Another extra alarm fire this week occurred on the border where Lake Zurich’s Fire Protection District meets with Barrington’s Fire Protection District. The house at 24506 W. Scott Road, with a Barrington mailing address, sustained major damage. If the house was on the other side of the street it would evidently have been in Barrington’s district.

Just after 11PM the resident reported a fire on the second floor of the house. First arriving companies reported fire showing and thick black smoke venting from the attic. The house is located right along the roadway which is a very long, narrow, dead end street. Second due companies were ordered to back in and lay a large diameter supply line out to Route 59 for tanker ops. After Engine 3214 setup, Barrington’s tanker backed in to supply additional water until the tanker shuttle could be initiated. Companies laid over 2,100 feet of 5-inch large diameter hose (LDH) from the house to Route 59 where Lake Zurich Engine 3211 setup to draft from a portable tank. Within minutes of arriving, a 2nd Alarm MABAS Box was requested. Until crews were available to move the LDH out of the road, firefighters had to walk almost a half mile to the scene. Once the road was open, additional rigs including Palatine’s quint, Deerfield’s squad, a Countryside ambulance for rehab, and one of the MESS Support rigs were able to advance to the scene. A short time later, a MABAS Polaris ATV assigned to MABAS Division 4, was brought to the scene to shuttle additional companies from staging to the scene.

Lake Zurich Engine 3214, a 1997 Pierce Saber, was the first engine to arrive at the fire. This company pulled a line and had 1,000 gallons of water to work with until the Barrington tanker could back up the street providing an additional 3,000 gallons. Larry Shapiro photo

Wilmington is on the site & awaiting a new engine

In MABAS Division 15 (in Will County) the Wilmington Fire Department has been added to the site thanks again to the work of Karl Klotz. Although Karl has a few photos to get of new rigs, Wilmington’s station is well represented. They run with a mixture of apparatus from Pierce, US Tanker, and Seagrave. Their newest piece for the time being is a 2007, Seagrave Maurauder II 100′ quint, but they are expecting an all stainless-steel engine from Seagrave in March. Engine 2611, which is their 1996 Pierce Saber has been sold to a broker, but will remain with the department until the new engine arrives in the Spring.

Wilmington runs Horton ambulances. Their two newest ambulances are Type I models on Ford F-Series’ chassis. The third ambulance as well as the one which was just replaced are Type III styles on Ford E-Series’ chassis.

Wilmington covers 105 square miles from their station at 501 N. Water Street although a second station might occur in the not to distant future. They have a full-time chief, 35 part-time firefighters and an additional 35 paid-on-call personnel.

Beach Park Fire Department is on the site

Beach Park Fire Protection District decal

Another Lake County, MABAS Division 4 department has been added to the site. Formerly known as the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District, The Beach Park Fire Department covers roughly 14 square miles in northeast Lake County which includes unincorporated areas of the county as well as Beach Park. They do not though currently provide coverage for the entire town of Beach Park as the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department has responsibility for a portion of the town.

According to the Beach Park Village Link Newsletter in the winter of 2003:

The New Beach Park Fire Department

In the last months of 2002, there were plenty of positive changes in the fire protection services for our village. Formerly known as the “Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District”, the name was officially changed to the “Beach Park Fire Department” (BPFD) last November to better define the department’s capabilities and service areas.

Beach Park has a mixture of apparatus in the fleet including Alexis, Pierce, Seagrave, Medtec, and Osage. The newest rig is Engine 1222 which is a 2008 Seagrave Maurauder II engine. Currently, Beach Park Engine 1212, a 2002 HME/Alexis engine is undergoing work at Alexis Fire Apparatus.

In recent Beach Park FD news, they have opened a second station at 13110 W. Major Avenue in Beach Park. This interesting station originated as an existing house with an attached garage. The garage was modified as a lobby and office area and a two-bay addition was then added for the apparatus. At the present time, this station has a crew of two or three which are a jump company, staffing either the engine or ambulance based on the nature of a request for service.

Glen Ellyn is on the site

Glen Ellyn FC 1926 Seagrave pumper

The Glen Ellyn Fire Company becomes only the second department posted to date representing Division 12. They are a volunteer department with a paid chief and contract medics who staff one ambulance in each station. Glen Ellyn has a reputation for purchasing interesting apparatus that are not the ‘norm’ for the area. Unique to them, they order engines in pairs so that they can place identical units in each station. They have two pair of engines that were purchased like this; one pair from 1983 built by 3D on Spartan Silent Knight (rear engine) chassis and the other pair was purchased in 1993 that are on Spartan Gladiator chassis with Saulsbury bodies.

Glen Ellyn has a truck in each station and various squad units. For many years now one of their trucks has been a Snorkel. Currently they have a 2000 Spartan Gladiator/Marion 75′ Snorkel in the downtown house and a 102′ Grumman AerialCat in the Taft Avenue station.

They have a beautiful statue outside their headquarters building, the money for which was donated to the department by an individual in recognition of the fire company celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2007.

Fire Muster and Flea Market in Chicago

Today was the FIre Engine Rally  & Firematic Swap Meet co-sponsored by the 5-11 Club of Chicago & The Fire Buffs of Illinois at the Chicago Fire Academy. Several private collectors brought apparatus and several pieces of apparatus from the CFD were on hand for visitors. Several vendors had goods for sale and a special treat for many was a visit by an FDNY Seagrave engine that was en route to be delivered in New York City.

Another treat was seeing three engines used to supply water to the old CFD water tower as it flowed three master streams.

Tomorrow, photos from the event will be posted.

Grayslake gets Seagrave engine

The Grayslake Fire Department (not yet represented on the site) in Lake County (Division 4) has recently taken delivery of a custom Seagrave engine. Engine 2717 has a top mount pump panel and an elevated light tower nested on top of the cab roof. The unit was due to a 2-11 alarm in Wauconda’s Fire District at 30699 N. Route 12 (Rand Road) in Volo. A commercial barn was destroyed just before midnight on June 1st. Some images from the fire scene can be seen HERE.

Traditional Wet Down in Buffalo Grove

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department brought a touch of what is considered by many as being an ‘East-Coast Volunteer Fire Company’ tradition to the Chicago area. This morning they had a wet-down ceremony to welcome the new Ferrara engine and Ferrara tower ladder to their new home. The event was attended by current and former Buffalo Grove fire department personnel, village officials and other invited guests. Chief Vavra made a brief opening statement which was followed by a hosing down of the rigs. Guests and firefighters then dried the rigs before ‘pushing’ them into station 26. Both rigs should be in service within the next month and a half. The engine is slated to be assigned to Station 27 and the tower will likely go into service at Station 26. The KME 75′ Quint now assigned to Station 27 would then be moved to Station 25.

Buffalo Grove is trading in the 1991 E-ONE 75′ Hush Quint and the 1989 Seagrave engine.
