Interim fire chief named for Orland FPD, chief is on leave of absence

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Orland Fire Protection District Chief Ken Brucki has been placed on a paid leave of absence, with an interim chief having been appointed, a district spokesman confirmed Thursday. Brucki, the district’s chief since June 2012, asked for and was given a leave for an indefinite time for personal reasons, spokesman Ray Hanania said in an email.

The leave took effect Tuesday. He was selected from three finalists for the chief’s job following the retirement in 2011 of Bryant Krizik, who had been on administrative leave.

Prior to being hired by the Orland fire district, Brucki worked since 1994 for the Pleasantview Fire Protection District, which serves Countryside, Hodgkins, Indian Head Park and portions of Burr Ridge.

He began his career as a volunteer firefighter in Merrionette Park in 1988 and later was a part-time firefighter in Darien-Woodridge before taking a full-time position at Pleasantview.

Excerpts from a previous ChicagoTribune.com article:

Orland Fire Protection District Chief Ken Brucki is the focus of a wide-ranging administrative review into areas such as job performance and financial matters, according to an attorney for the district.

Brucki, chief since June 2012, took a paid personal leave of absence in late August, and the district did not explain the reason for the leave. A district spokesman at the time said only that the leave was for an indefinite time period.

The fire district is conducting “kind of an audit” of the chief, looking at Brucki’s “overall performance, conduct” and finances, attorney Burt Odelson said. His firm handles labor relations for the district and isn’t involved in the chief’s review, Odelson said .

“We (the district) are looking into different records,” he said. “For now, he’s on personal leave, and we are doing an audit.”

The revelation of the review comes after the Daily Southtown, under Illinois’ freedom of information law, requested financial records pertaining to Brucki as well as emails and other correspondence related to his leave. In turning down the request for certain records, Odelson’s office said releasing the information would obstruct “active administrative enforcement proceedings” being conducted by the district.

Battalion Chief Michael Schofield is serving as interim fire chief during Brucki’s absence. Schofield has been with the Orland district since 1978.

McCook to shutdown fire department

This from the DesPlaines Valley News

McCook will ask voters this month to disband the village’s fire department and join the Pleasantview Fire Protection District.
“Because we have so little retail and we are stuck with an industrial tax base, we are no longer able to support a fire department,” said Jeff Tobolski, mayor of the village which has a population of only 228 as of the 2010 census.  Tobolski said the village has been managing a deficit of about $1.5 million for a number of years, but efforts to increase the retail base failed when Walmart pulled out of a plan a few years ago to build a Sam’s Club in town, which would have generated more than $1 million a year in taxes.Tobolski said the nine-person fire department costs the village $1.2 million per year.  He said everyone except the chief is a part-time firefighter and none of them is a trained paramedic.  “We offered to send two a year for paramedic training, but they did not embrace the idea,” he said.

Tobolski said the village notified the Teamsters union, which represents the firefighters, that it was going to ask to terminate the fire department and turn protection services over to the Pleasantview Fire District. The district is expected to maintain and staff the village’s firehouse.

“We will see significant savings by the move,” said Tobolski. “Our costs will go from $1.2 million to $200,000 in the first year.”

He said the fire district would provide better services including firefighter/paramedics instead of firefighter/EMTs as well as a better classification for insurance.  “Homeowners and businesses would see a savings on their insurance costs,” he said. The savings would depend on the fire district’s final rating after it absorbed the village’s service.

McCook Box Alarm 4-27-13

This from Erik Haak:

At 1950hrs on Saturday, April 27th, the McCook Fire Department was paged out to the report of an explosion occurring at a metal grinding company at 4828 S. Lawndale.  First arriving companies confirmed smoke showing from the A and D sides at 1954hrs and elevated the response to a full still.   The fire was contained in the 125 x 325 1-story rear section of the complex which included several additions that were not involved.  At 2012hrs, command pulled MABAS Division 10 Box #14-01 after companies reported heavy smoke conditions in the interior.  Several aerials were used to combat the slow burning fire that had melted through fiberglass portions of the roof.  Riverside Truck 1629 operated from the northeast corner of the building and within the complex’s fenced-in lot.  It’s aerial can be seen raised in several of the photos.  Brookfield Truck 419 operated an aerial from the southeast corner and was set up on Lawndale.  Bedford Park Truck 705 operated a stream from inside the complex on the south side of the building.  Pleasantview Truck 1519 operated a master stream from the northwest corner of the complex and was set up on Clyde Terrace.  Tri-State Truck 529 was set up off of the Joliet Road side of the building but never raised their aerial.  Lyons Squad 1316 lit up the east side of the building where most of the fireground activity occurred.  McCook Engine 1416 can also be seen supplying water to Riverside’s Truck as well as several handlines.  Images pictured were taken approximately one hour into the incident.
