Oswego Fire Department news

Excerpts from wspynews.com:

The following EMS Units were honored at the May 15th Swearing-In Ceremony at the Oswego Fire Department.

Engine-3, Medic-3 – Firefighter/Paramedics Jimm Pechinski, Matt Cox, Jon Vickery, and Lt. Dave Jordan

“In recognition of operations performed in a highly commendable manner during an EMS call resulting in a successful pre-hospital baby delivery”.  A successful in-home assisted birth of a healthy baby boy with subsequent treatment and transport of mother & child to Rush Copley Hospital in the morning of February 27, 2017.

Engine-4, Medic-4 – Firefighter/Paramedics Jeff Pokorney, Kyle Sheley, Dave Martinez, and Lt. Dan Gallup

“In recognition of operations performed in a highly commendable manner during an EMS incident resulting in the Rush Copley Medical Center Call of the Year for 2016”.  Rush Copley awarded this EMS call with both the Call of the Quarter and subsequently the Call of the Year due to the timely recognition of the severity of the patient’s symptoms and the resulting treatment and transport.  The EMS crew initiated care, discovered and recognized an abnormal heart rhythm indicating the patient was an immediate candidate for a CODE STEMI (a STEMI is short for ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction), which means the patient was in the midst of a significant life-threatening cardiac event.  Scene time at the patient’s location for this event – which included assessing the patient, placing and interpreting the heart monitor, and initiating care & transport – was less than 7 minutes!  The thorough and timely recognition of the cardiac event and the subsequent teamwork between the pre-hospital care of the Fire Department crew and the Emergency Room and Hospital staff, allowed the patient to undergo extensive cardiac procedures directly upon arrival at the hospital, thus saving the life of the patient.

Truck-1, Medic-1 – Firefighter/Paramedics Joshua Petersohn, Matt Goodbred, Jon Vickery, and Lt. Joe Johnson

“In recognition of operations performed in a highly commendable manner during an EMS incident resulting in successful cardiac defibrillation”.  The crew responded to an EMS call for a patient who fell and was barely breathing.  Upon arrival, it was noted that a bystander and then the police department had initiated CPR and an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) had been placed on the patient by the Police Officer with no shock advised. The EMS crew found the patient to be in asystole (without a heartbeat) and immediately initiated protocols and moved the patient to the ambulance for additional care.  The patient’s heart rhythm had then converted to one that was shockable, and the crew successfully defibrillated the patient into a sustainable heart rhythm, sedated & intubated the patient to take over the breathing, and successfully transported to the Emergency Department at Rush Copley Medical Center.

Oswego Fire Department news

Excerpts from wspynews.com:

A group of Oswego firefighters and paramedics helped deliver a baby boy at a home on Kevin Ln. in unincorporated Oswego. Oswego Firefighter Jon Vickery says this is the first time in his career he’s ever been on a birth call in the home setting.

While he took the lead, he says he couldn’t have made the delivery without the help of his crew.

They are trained to deliver a child, but he says it had been a few years since he went through his OB unit training.

Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show 2016

This from Steve Redick:

This year it was held in Oswego, some surprises, some regulars. Positioning of the few fire rigs that were there was tough, the police cars were pretty easy to shoot. I was excited to see the old Broadview ALF tower ladder is now apparently privately owned and hopefully will be making the rounds, I could not get a shot of it this time. Thanks to Dave Weaver for putting this event together. All the images can be seen here

Fire departments train for water rescues

Excerpts from theChicagoTribune.com:

The Fox River can be a dangerous place, as illustrated by two recent incidents. In Geneva, two boaters went into the river but were able to get themselves out of the water by the time firefighters arrived at the scene. In St. Charles, a kayaker went into the water and was helped by another boater and brought to shore.

The Aurora Fire Department’s 24-member dive team is trained in deep-water rescue and often practices on the Fox River, said fire department spokesman Lt. Jim Rhodes. Each month, the team trains for a different skill. Usually when the river is higher, we will do more swift water rescue training,” Rhodes said. This includes drills on how to retrieve or rescue someone who is caught in a situation where the river is running quickly.

The Oswego Fire Department has a technical rescue team with 23 members that specialize in swift water rescue, said department spokesman Battalion Chief Dan Schiradelly. “You have to understand the power of water,” Schiradelly said. In order to operate well in water rescues, it’s important that firefighters don’t fear the water.

Further up the Fox River, Elgin firefighters recently trained for swift water rescues near the Kimball Street dam, a spot that reminds how treacherous the Fox River can be. “Training here reinforces the challenges of river rescues and the dangers the river poses,” Elgin Fire Lt. William Nangle said. “It puts what we do in perspective and points to a harsh reality.”

That harsh reality happened on June 2, 1974, when Elgin Fire Department Capt. Stanley Balsis, 45, and firefighter Michael Whalen, 25, died while trying to save a young man from drowning. The two firefighters used an aluminum row boat with a motor attached to the back to attempt the rescue. The boat typically was used to drag the river for drowning victims, not for saving lives. But it was the only equipment the two had when they tried to save 20-year-old James Krueger of Stone Park, who had gone over the dam.

Firefighters went over how to rescue someone who had fallen into the fast-moving river below the dam, with Nangle discussing the finer points of “reach, throw, row and go.”

He explained that if possible, first, if the person in the water can’t help himself, rescuers can try to pull the person to shore by reaching out with a pole or other object onto which the victim can grab. If not, the next option is to toss a rope with a throw bag that floats in front of the person in the water for that person to grab. Past that, rescuers next option would be to use a boat to reach a victim, and finally, to enter the water to make a rescue.

…  alcohol plays a role in many water-related craft accidents and drownings …

… the Elgin Water Rescue Team typically is called into action about a dozen times a year, with many of those false calls.

…  drones … for water rescues are being used to survey the stretch of water where an incident is happening, for locating victims and obstacles.
