Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Firefighters at the Norwood Park Fire Department have been careful so far breaking in their new firehouse dog, Goldy, still a puppy. They took her to the March 28 Norridge Village Board meeting, where she was introduced and held up for a photograph with Lucas Miezal, a Ridgewood High School student who was honored by the board at that meeting.

“Once she’s trained properly and we’re comfortable, we’ll take her out to some of the public education events,” Firefighter-Paramedic Mark Blondell said. “We’ll probably bring her along with us in Fire Safety Month, when we go to all the schools in town and talk to kids.”

Goldy, a Labrador-collie mix, succeeds Ember, the department’s former dog who died in November. Goldy is named after Norwood Park Firefighter Chris Goldsworthy, who died from cancer in 2006 at the age of 37.

Firefighters did a lot of research looking for a dog to replace Ember, a Dalmation. Their search led them to a rescue shelter in Missouri.

For now, the 33 firefighters are just trying to get her used to the people around the station.
