4-Alarm fire with 2 specials in Northlake, 2-15-14 (part 1)

This is the first in what will be a multi-part posting about Saturday night’s 4-Alarm fire with 2 specials in Northlake. Multiple contributors were at the scene.

Prior to receiving multiple cellphone calls, someone knocked on the door of the Leyden Township FPD station at the corner of Mannheim and Grand just before 6PM to report a fire four blocks down the road. Units found heavy smoke pushing from a one-story, commercial structure with a bow-string truss roof. The building was occupied by a tire business and was currently full of tires.

The fire, at 2200 N. Mannheim Road was in the Northlake Fire Protection District. (opposite sides of the intersection belong to either the Leyden Township FPD or the Northlake FPD). The Still Alarm was filled out and a Box Alarm, then a 2nd Alarm were requested within minutes, followed very shortly be the 3rd and 4th Alarms.

The roof collapsed early and sent flames several hundred feet into the air as companies setup elevated master streams from the Leyden quint, trucks from Northlake and Franklin Park, and then the Schiller Park tower ladder.

Here’s the rundown of companies and alarms:

  • Still Alarm: Northlake Engine & truck; Leyden quint; Melrose Park engine
  • Full Still: Bensenville engine; Leyden ambulance; Elmhurst truck
  • Box Alarm: engines from Hillside & Stone Park; Franklin Park truck; Schiller Park tower ladder; ambulances from Bensdenville & Melrose Park
  • 2nd Alarm: engines from Berkely & Elmwood Park; Rosemont tower ladder; Broadview squad
  • 3rd Alarm: engines from Norwood Park & River Grove; Addison tower ladder
  • 4th Alarm: engine from Park Ridge and Villa Park

  • 2nd Special Alarm: Foam Task Force from Chicago Division 9; Battalion 8, Engine 10, Squad 7, Squad 7A, ARFF 6-5-3
  • Also at the scene were: Bellwood bus, Bellwood command post, Bellwood tower ladder, River Grove ambulance, Schiller Park ambulance, MESS Canteen, Salvation Army Canteen, O’Hare Towing,  numerous ESDA units, multiple chief officers

Bensenville working fire in auto salvage yard 6-8-12

This from Josh Boyajian:

Bensenville had a fire this morning at 710 E. Green, Victory Auto Wreckers. They had a good amount of fire contained to a pile of cars in the junkyard. Here are some shots I took of some of the rigs there including Wood Dale’s new engine.

Thanks Josh

Local apparatus at FDIC 2012

There were four area units on display this year in the FDIC Exhibits. New engines for Carol Stream, Fermilab, and Northlake were shown in separate booths and the MABAS 10 MVU was also in the exhibit hall.

A bit of “retro” in the Pierce booth.

Most have probably seen the newest Pierce cab and chassis that was unveiled last year – the Dash CF. It featured a grille that matched the Velocity, the Impel, and the Arrow XT.

As it turns out, the engine sits in the back of the cab and the grille is for aesthetics only. This year, Pierce displayed a 105′ rear-mount, PUC, quint on the Dash CF chassis without a grille. If one looks beyond the one-piece windshield and the cab-tilt cutouts, the unit has the appearance of an early Pierce Arrow or a Javelin.

Elmwood Park Box Alarm 1-17-11

The Elmwood Park Fire Department had two Box Alarm fires on January 17th. The first was after midnight, and the second was roughly 8AM when they received a call for a fire in a two-story, single family, frame building of balloon construction in the 2100 block of 73rd Court. Residents reported a fire in the second floor bathroom. First arriving companies encountered heavy smoke and high heat on the second floor and initially had trouble finding the seat of the fire. Heavy fire was visible after companies vented the front of the building and there was a partial roof collapse in the rear. Interior crews were ordered out of the building and the attack became defensive. Elmwood Park was assisted by River Forest, River Grove, and Norwood Park on the still alarm. The box alarm brought Franklin Park, Leyden Township, Melrose Park, and Northlake (RIT) to the scene while Schiller Park changed quarters into Elmwood Park.

Jim Lee (CFD FAO) was there as fire vented through the roof and submitted several images.

Northlake Box Alarm

The Northlake Fire Department responded to a house fire at 412 N. Laporte Avenue yesterday and arrived to find heavy smoke pushing out of all sides of the structure. They upgraded the response to a MABAS Box Alarm which brought mutual aid from several departments in MABAS Division 20. Dave Traiforos arrived on the scene just behind the first due companies and submitted several images depicting what companies encountered on arrival and throughout the incident.
