2-Alarm commercial fire in Evanston, 12-29-13 (final)

One parting post on last weeks commercial fire in Evanston, some interesting apparatus shots from Steve Redick.

  • Perhaps someone can comment on this, but the webmaster can’t remember another time (certainly in recent years) that all five Evanston engines were pumping at the same fire
  • Steve has the first shot we’ve seen of the Glenview/Northfield Truck 14/29 in service and labeled as Truck 29
  • Wilmette and Winnetka engines were also pumping at the scene, though Steve tells us that they were each substituted for Evanston engines that required fuel
  • an interesting note, with the inclusion of the Wilmette and Winnetka engines, this fire utilized Engines 21, 22, 23, 24 25, 26, & 28 … almost a complete sequence of numerical units …

Northbrook house fire 6-30-13

Sunday evening at roughly 9:15PM, the Northbrook Fire Department received a call reporting fire in the home at 1337 Walters Avenue. As units went en-route, the police reported a working fire at the scene, and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 (working fire) before the first fire company arrived. In addition to units from Northbrook, Glencoe responded with an engine, Northfield with a truck, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52.

Fire was in a second floor bedroom and communicated into the attic before venting through the roof. A Box Alarm was requested for additional companies to cover the three Northbrook stations. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were at the scene. The fire was contained within 25 minutes. The residents, who were home when the fire broke out, all evacuated safely.

Several images of the apparatus were submitted by Larry, and we expect to see shots showing the fire from Tim, since he arrived right behind the Northbrook companies.

Northfield EMS Box Alarm 4-21-13 – fiery crash on the Edens

Just after 9PM on Sunday evening, the Northfield Fire Department was initially dispatched for a small brush fire along the Edens Expressway (I94) near Willow Road. Other calls came in reporting a truck fire and additional units went en-route. As companies neared the expressway, they saw a huge fire along the center median of the northbound lanes about a 1/2 north of Willow Road. They encountered a fully-involved tractor-trailer combination on top of a car.

An EMS Box Alarm was requested immediately bringing ambulances from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Glencoe in addition to the Northfield ambulance that was on the scene performing triage. A Morton Grove squad, Wilmette tower ladder and engine, and Glenview truck responded supplementing the Northfield squad and engine. The intensity of the fire prompted a call for Crash Truck 23 and Crash Truck 39, two ARFF units from Wheeling and Prospect Heights.

The occupants of the car were already out when companies arrived thanks to the assistance of other motorists. Three people including the two occupants of the car that was underneath the trailer were transported to the hospital.

This video was posted as seen from along the frontage road.

Prospect Heights Crash Truck 39 reported that they had exhausted their entire volume of on-board extinguishing agent when they left the scene.

New apparatus for Glenview

As posted previously HERE and HERE, the Glenview Fire Department took delivery of a new quint for Truck 14. The web site has been updated to show the new truck, though it’s not expected to be in service until June. Here are some additional images of the new Truck 14 and a comparison shot of the previous Truck 14, which will become Truck 14R/Truck 29.

The Village of Northfield reportedly contributed $100,000 towards the purchase of this new unit. In return for that investment, Truck 14R will be housed at Northfield Station 29. It will run as Truck 29 for responses where Northfield is due out of town with a truck. Glenview will respond into Northfield for alarms and fires. When Glenview Truck 14 is out of service for any reason, the older unit will return to Glenview as Truck 14.

There are a few differences between the new unit and it’s predecessor. They include:

  • a slightly longer wheelbase due to an elongated pump panel which now incorporates the Smart Power 10-KW generator and a XRT power system for the Hurst tools

  • small tool compartment behind the cab
  • Northfield’s name on the sign board

  • short barrier clearance doors

Glenview also recently put a new ambulance in service at Station 6. Having purchased one of the last Medtec units prior to the shutdown, they have a 2013 Type I Medtec on an IHC 4300 chassis similar to the rest of their ambulances. The new unit has LED lighting and a slightly different paint scheme on the box that features black near the roof. This replaces the 2007 IHC/Medtec from Station 6 which has become the spare ambulance. The previous spare, a 2001 Freightliner FL60/Road Rescue has been disposed of.
