Commercial fire in Wheeling, 11-2-15

This from Larry Shapiro:

Wheeling firefighters were called to a commercial laundry at 45 W. Hintz around 7PM for a reported fire in the building. The first engine reported a large industrial building with an evacuation but nothing showing. Employees said there was a fire in the building and upon entry they found a machine fire roughly 500 feet into the structure. Some fire was reported along the exhaust stack on the roof prompting an upgrade to a Code 4 for the working fire. The fire was extinguished though with the companies from the initial alarm. The Division 1 MVU (housed in Wheeling) was brought tot he scene to clear the smoke from the building.

Here are a few images and a short video. More photos are at shapirophotography.net.

House fire in Wilmette, 10-22-15

Wilmette firefighters were notified of a house under construction that was on fire in the 900 block of Shabona Lane around 10:35PM on Thursday night (10/22/15). An orange glow in the sky was reported by the police and the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire as companies left quarters. Flames were estimated to be 20+ feet above the house and encroaching on the neighbor’s house to the north.

An aggressive interior attack  followed a blitz attack from a deck gun, and the fire was out in about 20 minutes.

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

A young boy and a man were rescued from a two-alarm fire that ripped through their home in west suburban Oak Park (5/7/15). Village President Anan Abu-Taleb said they are hospitalized in critical condition … and the boy’s sister, who is 12 or 13 years old, was also home when the fire started … is recovering at the hospital.

Neighbors reported hearing a large boom before flames broke out overnight. The back of the apartment building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The fire spread from the apartment building to the structure next door. The roofs of both homes collapsed. Fire officials said both are likely to be a total loss.

3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 5)

This from Steve Redick at the 3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows:

A distant northwest suburb of Chicago (Rolling Meadows). Fire in a large apartment complex … poor access to 3 sides of the building and difficult water supply. Extreme cold, heavy snow and ice cover. A resident jumped from the 3rd floor and did not survive. Fire destroyed a large portion of the building but was apparently held at a fire wall. Two elevated master streams, a deck gun, and several handlines were used. The aerial view gives an idea of the size and limited access to the fire building. Interesting to note the daylight photo is from a major fire within this same complex several years ago with a similar outcome, but in much better weather conditions. 3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

Rolling Meadows companies were called to 5201 Carriageway Drive for a reported fire in a third floor apartment around 8PM Wednesday evening (3/4/15). While en-route, they were advised of a sofa on fire with flames climbing the wall, and Battalion 15 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire. Police arriving on the scene reported flames shooting out of a third floor window, and then that a resident had jumped from a third floor balcony. The alarm was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.

Reportedly the police officers were performing CPR on the victim when firefighters arrived. The Chicago Tribune reports

The apartment was evacuated but officials said one person had died as a result of the blaze, officials said.

The person, whose age and gender was not immediately provided, jumped from the balcony of a third floor unit of the apartment building, said Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. The person was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

As of about 10 p.m., the blaze had been “contained,” but firefighters were still working to put out the fire, Franzgrote said. The first and second floors of the building had been evacuated, and firefighters were currently checking the third floor.

The alarm was subsequently upgraded to a 2nd Alarm and then a 3rd Alarm before being struck out shortly before midnight.

Several contributors were at the scene and there will be a series of posts showing images and videos.  As a side note, this building is directly across there street from another building in the same complex that was the site of a 3-Alarm fire several years ago.
