New fire station being built in Joliet

The Joliet Fire Department is in the construction phase of a new station for Station 3.

The $1.6 million station  — $1.1 million of which is from a federal grant – broke ground this winter on Laraway Road. When completed, it will replace the station at 319 Grove St.

The article is written around the fact that there are no women currently on the job in Joliet and that the new station will be one of three in the city with separate facilities to accommodate women on the job,

Joliet’s new Fire Station No. 3 will have something that the current station does not – separate locker room and bathrooms for women.

Joliet has never had any female firefighters, but Fire Chief Joe Formhals said that streak is not likely to last long.

“We’re going to get a woman on, it’s just a matter of when,” Formhals said. “You have to anticipate that. I don’t think we’re going to get 50 women all at once, but it will add a new dimension.”

Currently, about 200 people are on Joliet’s eligibility list and only four or five are women, Formhals said. When there is an opening, the department starts with candidates at the top of the list.

Formhals said the city hasn’t updated its eligibility list in years due to a virtual hiring freeze, but he hopes to create a new eligibility list and budget for new hires in 2012. More woman firefighter candidates could be picked up by requiring a paramedic certificate, Formhals said, adding the number of women in paramedic training programs are steadily increasing.

Palatine moves into new station

At the beginning of May, Palatine closed Station 81 at 455 W. Dundee Road and moved into the new Station 81 at 1215 N. Quentin Road. According to the Palatine website:

Construction is nearly complete on this new fire station on the corner of Quentin Road and Echo Lane.  It replaces Station 81’s old facility on Dundee Rd. with one better located to serve our residents in the northwestern section of Palatine, as well as one that can more efficiently fill the needs of 21st century fire / rescue operations.  We moved into this station and began to run calls from this location on May 2, 2011.

Station 81 is staffed by three members; typically a Lieutenant and two firefighter / paramedics. They staff either the quint or the ambulance, depending on the nature of the call. Any support apparatus then respond from other stations. In addition to Quint and Ambulance 81, this station houses our Reserve Squad and our Reserve Command vehicle.

Western Springs Fire Department patchAnother department in MABAS Division 10 has been added to the site. The Western Springs Fire Department currently has one station at 4353 Wolf Road. Station 2 is under construction at 5501 Grand Avenue. The apparatus consists of two Medtec ambulances, three engines, a truck, and a command car. Staffing is a combination of full-time, contract, part-time, and POC personnel. Currently the apparatus is painted white over red although past vehicles, which will be displayed in the historic photo gallery, were all white. Larry here is some new news. The station faces West and has non drive thru apparatus bays. The station is scheduled to open in the Summer of 2011. I am sure there will be a engine and ambulance assigned to this house. They may also store the two antiques down here. I will be scanning more of the historical Western Springs apparatus negatives.

Grayslake breaks ground for new station

The Grayslake Fire Protection District in MABAS Division 4 had a ground breaking ceremony this week at the site of what will be their Station 3 at 22405 Peterson Road and Route 60.

Construction of the new 10,600-square-foot station is scheduled to begin in March and be completed by September 2011.

Having the new fire station be located in the far southern portion of the district will significantly shorten response times …

Responding from Fire Station 1 in downtown Grayslake, or Fire Station 2 near the College of Lake County, can be hampered by train crossings and distance.

The third fire station is a response to Grayslake’s growth in recent years, he said in a statement.

Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District update

An article in Monday’s Daily Herald discusses a skirmish between the Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District and the Village of Campton Hills over the construction of a new fire station.  Below are excerpts from the article.

Campton Hills officials have now brought a cease-and-desist order to the battle over construction of a new fire station in the district.

“The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District has not been acting in good faith in its relationship with the village,” said Village President Patsy Smith in a written statement.

Smith said once it became clear the fire district wanted to build a fire station the village tried to speed up the review process only to see the district fail to supply information and documents about the fire station to the village for the past six weeks. Smith said the district’s withdrawal of the permit application only prolongs the process.

“They cannot legally continue building without the proper approvals,” Smith wrote. “What is needed at this point is for the fire district end its ‘gamesmanship’ and deal with the village and the citizens of the fire district in a straightforward manner. The lives of our citizens are at stake, and the village board does not appreciate the fire district’s deceptive methods of conducting business.”

The entire article can be found HERE.
Thanks to Dennis McGire, Jr. for keeping an eye on the new district.
