There have been several previous postings which referenced the IAFC Fire Rescue International Trade Show in Chicago several weeks ago. A gallery is available by scrolling to the bottom of the page HERE which fittingly shows many of the trucks as they were leaving McCormick Place and lining up to receive a few gallons of fuel so that they could make their way to a gas station. As with any trade show, the fuel is siphoned out of the tanks before they enter the convention center as a safety measure to reduce the hazards of fires and leaks.

Although the units featured in the gallery are a hodgepodge sampling of the display pieces, there are images of several local units which are better shots than what was available inside the convention center. These images include the Freightliner/Medtec MICU from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, the Pierce Impel quint from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago, the Spartan/Super Vac (SVI) HDR from Cherry Valley, the Pierce Velocity PUC tower ladder from South Holland, the custom Sutphen SP112 industrial tower ladder for the Exxon Mobile Joliet Refinery and the Spartan/Crimson rear mount aerial ladder for Chicago.

Addison Fire District Station 2

In Division 12, the Addison Fire District No. 1 runs out of three stations. They staff one truck, three engines, three ambulances (medic units) and a battalion chief covering 13 square miles. There are a bunch of missing photos though in this listing as Larry Shapiro visited the department Monday with limited time and was not able to complete the photography. A few of the apparatus photos represent the units on-scene at fires over the past year or so. The images will be updated with more flattering shots when new photos are submitted. Addison runs Medtec Type I ambulances and E-ONE engines; two of which are on Cyclone chassis and the newest unit has a Spartan Gladiator chassis. They have a Pierce 100′ tower ladder as their frontline piece with an E-ONE tower in reserve.

Interestingly, their E-ONE tower ladder is unique to this area. By far, the best selling tower ladder for E-ONE for many years has been the 95′ rear mount tower. Addison was one of the few departments in the US that took advantage of a newer EONE model in 1993 when they introduced a longer tower ladder with a reach of 105′. The 105′ model in the E-ONE product line was replaced by the HP100 (100′) tower ladder over 10 years later.

New ambulance in Addision

The Addison Fire Department in Division 12 (Dupage County) recently put a new ambulance into service. They purchased a 2007 IHC 4300/Medtec Type I demonstrator which is currently in service as Medic 130 out of Station 3. An interesting note though for apparatus followers is that Addison rotates their apparatus between stations. The unit number for responses corresponds to the station where it is housed, not a particular unit. So, as this new unit is currently Medic 130, it might be assigned to Station 2 in the future where it will run (and be labeled) as Medic 120. Addison uses numbers on rigid signs which slide in and out of a frame on either side of the apparatus to depict the current assignment. This applies to the engines and trucks as well.

New Medtec ambulances

Ambulance 15 in Rolling Meadows is slated to be replaced in the next several months with an IHC 4300/Medtec Type I unit.

Ambulance 8 in Elk Grove Village recently received a 2009 Ford E450/Medtec Type III unit. (sn 8505)

Additionally in Elk Grove, Battalion 2 has a new 2009 Chevy Suburban which is red. This replaces the previous unit that was maroon.

McHenry Township is added

The largest fire department in McHenry County Division 5 is the McHenry Township FIre Protection District. With over 150 part-time firefighters running out of four stations, this department responded to 4,369 calls for service in 2009 in a district that is roughly 56 square miles. Their fleet of suppression equipment is 99% Pierce with the one exception being a 1986 S&S tanker running out of Station 2. The newest additions are a pair of twin 2009 Pierce Velocity engines and a 2010 Ford F350/Medtec Type I ambulance. Prior to the purchase of these Velocity units, all McHenry Township engines were on Pierce Lance chassis. They have two squad units; one Pierce Arrow and one Pierce Saber.

Area updates for new apparatus

Troy has taken delivery of their second Pierce Arrow XT engine bearing their new color scheme. This is Engine 2221 (the previous one was 2211).

Algonquin has two new units in production at Ferrara. Similar to Buffalo Grove, they purchased an engine and a tower ladder. Reportedly, that’s where the similarities end though as the Algonquin units are said to be fully loaded. The first set of production photos at the Ferrara plant can be seen HERE for both units.

Algonquin also received a new ambulance from Medtec this spring.

The Countryside FPD is Lake County is expecting a new Horton ambulance and a tender from US Tank very soon.

Glenview has reportedly placed an order now for two engines from Pierce. Though both will feature the Arrow XT cab and chassis, one will have a conventional pumper body similar to engines 6 & 7 while the second will have a rescue style body like engine 8 which was shown HERE.

Huntley is expecting a new IHC 4300 Type I ambulance from Medtec.

Highland Park is in the initial stages of designing specifications for a new ambulance. Currently, their ambulances are Type III units on E-Series Ford chassis. The new unit will reportedly be a departure from this style and will be a Type I design featuring an F-Series chassis from Ford.

Libertyville is added to the site

In Lake County (Division 4), Libertyville operates out of three stations. Two of their stations are at either end of the district along Milwaukee Avenue and the third is on the eastern edge just outside the main Abbott Labs campus.

Libertyville Fire Department Quint 462 2008 Pierce Velocity 75' RM quint

Quint 462 runs out of Station 2. It is a 2008 Pierce Velocity with a 75' rear mounted aerial ladder on a full length chassis. Since the 75' ladder only requires one set of outriggers, Libertyville has added storage space at their disposal where the front jack s would be for a larger aerial. Larry Shapiro photo

Libertyville is a 100% Pierce department with regards to suppression units and their five ambulances are a mix of Medtec and Road Rescue.

Station 3 which houses a jump company with an engine and ambulance also has space which is home for offices of the Abbott Fire Chief plus classroom space. The Abbott command unit is housed in this station along with a spare ambulance and CERT trailer.

Buffalo Grove update

Ambulance 224, Buffalo Grove’s 2009 Ford Medtec has finally been added to the site. Buffalo Grove rotates the ambulances and each does not have a specific station assignment. They are lettered only with the shop numbers.

Engine 217, a 2010 Ferrara on an Igniter chassis with a 1500 GPM pump, 750 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam will go into service shortly at Station 27 on the north end of town.
