Kenosha Fire Department news (more)

Excerpts from the kenoshanews.com:

Kenosha Fire Station No. 1, located at the northwest corner of 22nd Avenue and 52nd Street, is expected to be completed and operational before Aug. 1. It is located at the former Bain Elementary School site. A capstone from the school — inscribed with Edward Bain School 1906 — and a mantel was saved during the demolition project. Both will be placed at the south entrance.

The new station will house 16 firefighters, two engine companies, one truck company, and two rescue squads (one active, one reserve). There will be a minimum of 12 personnel for each shift. Additional office space and a training room are also planned.

The $6.61 million project combines two aging stations into one, centrally located super station. There will be five stations with the addition of Station No. 1. Station No. 3 (2121 Roosevelt Road) and Station No. 5 (2125 Washington Road) will be vacated and repurposed by the city.

The medical unit from Station 5 will relocate to Station 6 (2615 14th Place) Other locations are Station 2 (8530 30th Ave.), Station 4 (4810 60th St.) and Station 7 (9700 52nd St.). Station No. 4 will remain the administrative site.

The city has coordinated rebuilding of the intersection of 52nd Street and 22nd Avenue to accommodate fire station traffic, as well as reconstruction of 22nd Avenue in that area.

Kenosha Fire Department news

This from Keith Grzadziel:

These are a few pics of the new mega station being built in Kenosha.  It is going to be designated as Station 1. The department is relocating the companies from Stations 3 and 5
which will both be closed upon completion.  Ironically their former Station 1, which is still connected to their city hall, has been closed for several years with apparatus shuffed around and reassigned.

5-Alarm fire in Salem, WI – 6-8-16

Excerpts from Fox6now.com:

Fifteen fire departments were called to the scene of a five-alarm fire on Wilmot Road in Salem (WI) on Wednesday, June 8th. More than 52,000 gallons of water had to be used to bring that fire under control. The building where it happened is a total loss after the blaze.

There are no hydrants in the area, so firefighters had to bring water to the scene. Water from the lake had to be utilized when the water level in Salem’s water tower became alarmingly low. Officials say if it had gotten any lower, the town’s water supply would have been threatened. That went on for about four hours until this fire was finally brought under control. The fire was contained to just the one building which has about 10 units. The building is a total loss. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for treatment of possible heat exhaustion — but no one else was hurt.

Somers Fire Department news

Excerpts from the KenoshaNews.com:

Somers Fire Chief Carson Wilkinson is back home. His new job has brought him closer to family and back into the firehouse.

For more than 25 years, Wilkinson was with the Kenosha Fire Department, most of those years as a division chief in charge of training. At the same time, he had been working part time at Road America in Elkhart Lake before taking a full-time position as the organization’s safety director.

Hired in March to replace Tom Smith, who left the Somers Fire Department more than a year ago, the Paddock Lake native said he took the Somers job because he wanted to come home.

“I wanted to get back to where my family is,” said Wilkinson, whose son David is a lieutenant with the Pleasant Prairie Fire Department. His daughter, who lives in Buffalo Grove, Ill., is also married to a firefighter.

In the nearly three months Wilkinson, 60, has been chief, he said he has formalized the way firefighters in the village are introduced to their job.  His son presented him with the chief’s helmet when he was sworn in on March 10, .

Wilkinson believes that families should be involved because “it’s one of those professions that affects family life. You can’t leave the job at work all the time,” he said. “So, it’s important to have it mean something for family members.”

Under his command are 55 employees, including eight full-time and 47 part-time and paid-on-call firefighters. Among the goals Wilkinson has for the department is to improve its rating for fire departments.

“The previous chiefs got Somers to an ISO 4,” he said. “We’re going to try to move it toward (a rating of) 3.”

That rating, he said, would be comparable to Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie.

While the rating isn’t affected by its rescue component, Wilkinson said he wants to have firefighters become certified paramedics.

The department has certified I-99 emergency medical technicians, who perform many of the same duties as paramedics, however, the I-99 classification will soon be changing, he said.
