In MABAS Division 27, the University Park Fire Department has been added to the site. This department has almost completed a change to black over red apparatus throughout the fleet. Previously, the rigs were black over white over lime green which was the color scheme used by the department under its’ former name. Prior to 1984, the village and subsequently the fire department was call Park Forest South. As a means to achieve autonomy, the village became University Park in 1984 and the fire department, being a municipal department, changed as well. A well documented department history is available on the fire department website HERE.

Recently, the department received a new E-ONE tower ladder. They traded three older pieces to the dealer; a Hendrickson/American/LTI tower ladder and two Hendrickson/FMC engines.

University Park has a mixture of E-ONE and American LaFrance apparatus in addition to a Spartan/FMC/RPI/Pierce engine that formerly belonged to Beecher, IL. Both of the department’s ambulances are Type I units from Medtec on IHC chassis.

more historic galleries in the works

As historical galleries are added to more fire departments that are represented on the site, we are pleased to be adding images that Karl Klotz has begun to scan from his collection. There is quite a bit of work involved to scan, collate, and label the image files that come in, and Karl’s images are a welcome addition. Here are just two of the images that have been submitted for inclusion in future galleries.

Braceville is added to MABAS Division 15

The Braceville Fire Department covers 1.5 square miles in Grundy County. They have one station which is staffed by 17 volunteers responding to both EMS and fire calls. They have two engines, one truck, a brush rig, and an ambulance in addition to a Chevy Suburban. The ambulance and one of the engines were both previously owned by Braidwood. The truck is from the Lyondell/Equistar facility. It is a 1979 tandem axle Seagrave chassis with a 54′ Squrt and bodywork by Pierce. It carries 500 gallons of water plus 500 gallons of foam. The X-Braidwood engine was built in 1982 by Alexis on a Hendrickson 1871-C chassis. The C designates a contour cab. Hendrickson also offered the S or square cab design at the time. This engine is soon to be replaced with a new Spartan Metro Star Darley engine in December. The new engine has a light tower and a complete set of Genesis Rescue tools in the front bumper and at the rear of the unit.

North Chicago is on the site

North Chicago Fire Department patch

In northern Lake County, the North Chicago Fire Department runs a fleet of Pierce and Medtec units out of two stations. Their 8 square mile district borders the Great Lakes Naval Training Center on two sides. Their newest piece of apparatus is an 85′ tower ladder from Pierce which replaced a 1977 Hendrickson 1871-S/Pierce/LTI 85′ tower ladder. North Chicago is expecting another new Pierce in January. This will be a Pierce custom Contender engine to replace a 1986 Pierce Dash engine with open jump seats.

At North Chicago Station 2 on Buckley Road is their newest ambulance. Purchased in 2009, this was a Medtec demonstrator that was built in 2002. It arrived with blue decals which was the design that Medtec had created so the unit would appeal to a traditional rescue squad. The blue was subsequently removed and replaced with red graphics. This explains why this ambulance design is different looking than the other North Chicago ambulances.

Prior to changing the graphics on this 2002 Medtec demonstrator that North Chicago purchased in 2009, it was in service for a short time with the blue graphics seen here. This photo was taken on-scene at a 2nd alarm fire response in Libertyville in July of 2009 shortly after the new ambulance was delivered. Larry Shapiro photo
