Gary Fire Department update

This from Eric Haak:

Six Gary fire stations have been adorned with new indicator placards to coincide with their switch to a consolidated Lake County dispatch system.  86 for Headquarters, 87 on Squad 2, 89 on Engine 4, 96 on Engine 11, 97 on Engine 12 and 98 on Engine 13.  The other in-service stations did not have these placards on them as of 11/07 and I do not know if they will be getting them.  I will share pictures of the other stations in a different post.  I am not someone who is in the know, just a casual observer.  I am sure some of the other experts out there can answer questions as to who is where and why.  I will comment that the Engine 9 you see in the headquarters bay was actually running as Engine 1 on Saturday (11/07) in case anyone was wondering.  A nice day to take pictures so I thought I would share.  Pretty quiet day overall.  A lot of medic calls and no structure fires.

Gary to cross-train police officers and firefighters

Excerpts from the NorthwestIndianaTimes.com:

The city is expected to follow the lead of other cities like Benton Harbor, Mich., in cross-training police and firefighters.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, who spoke about the proposal at Tuesday’s Finance Committee meeting, said the idea could help hold down costs while providing more of a police presence on the streets. The incentive for public safety officers to acquire such skills would be an increase in pay as well as a chance to increase their marketability, she said.

The city’s proposed budget for next year already calls for a $5,000 increase in pay for police and firefighters. This follows an earlier $2,500 increase approved for the current year and the mayor is proposing another $2,500 increase for 2017.

With the proposed raise for next year, patrol officers would see their pay increase from $41,804 to $46,804. As a public safety officer trained in both police and firefighting skills, a person would be paid more than $50,000. Cost savings, she said, would come from needing fewer people overall in the two departments.

Freeman-Wilson thought it might be next year before the city would see its first public safety officers and indicated there would always be those who want to do one job or the other and not both.

… with the possibility of other cities luring public safety officers away once they complete their training in Gary, the mayor said that at one time the city required officers to have to pay back the cost of their training if they did not serve three years with the city, and the administration is looking into the possibility of re-instituting such a policy.

911 Dispatch Center in Gary mishandles call

Excerpts from ABCChicago.com where the audio recording is available:

A 911 dispatcher has been disciplined for her handling of an emergency call at a health club in Gary, Ind. The gym patron who needed help survived, but he’s worried there’s a larger issue when you call 911 in Lake County.

“I was just passed out,” said Clement Ervin last month. His friend called 911, explained his condition, and got this response from the dispatcher.

Dispatcher: “Okay, we’re kind of short on medics so it’s going to be a minute.”
Caller: “You said who?”
Dispatcher: “We don’t have any medics and it’s going to be a minute.”
Caller: “Okay, let me take him to the hospital.”

The Lake County dispatcher offered no additional help. Her boss says that was the error.

“Being a dispatcher, myself included, you don’t tell someone you don’t have resources, you contact the agency and tell them your problem, then they’re the ones that guide the resources,” said Brian Hitchcock, executive director, Lake County 911 Department.

And since an ambulance was not available, Gary officials said firefighters right across the street from the gym could have responded. But the Lake County dispatcher never transferred the call to them.

“The call did not officially go through the Gary dispatch. And because of that, a unit was not sent,” said LaLosa Dent Burns, Gary spokeswoman.

In June, Burt Sanders died of a heart attack inside a Gary church after his 911 call was mishandled. Lake County fired a dispatcher and suspended another one. That’s why Ervin, who wants to raise awareness, is now speaking out about his experience.

The executive director of the 911 department said a new, state-of-the-art dispatch center will open next month, and all the dispatchers will be trained under a national standard.

Working fire in Gary, IN 4/11/15

This from Eric Haak:

Another busy weekend for the Gary Fire Department.  This was at the corner of 43rd and Georgia Street and was a one-story grocery store.  As you can see in the third image, water pressure became an issue at one point.  Lake Ridge was brought in as an additional engine company so that other Gary resources could remain in place.  While this was an active incident, Engine 8 had a brush fire on the opposite side of town.  Gary companies working this incident were Engines 9 and 5, Truck 2 and Squad 2.

As seen around … Gary, Indiana

This from Eric Haak:

I spent Sunday (3/15/15) in Gary, Indiana and even though I didn’t catch the big one, the day was at least interesting as it usually is in Gary.  Companies were dispatched to a dwelling fire in the 2400 block of Colfax around 12:45.  I was on the other side of town and missed the address so by the time I arrived it was mostly out.  Turned out to be the same vacant dwelling that was burned a few weeks ago.
Truck 2 broke down while en route and had to be replaced with Truck 1 from the other side of town.  With decent light I took a few shots of the responding rigs.  Squad 2 is now responding in the Chevy 3500 that is pictured.  They responded with three in the rig.

At about 2:00, a brush fire came in out in Miller (the far east side of town).  The fire was on a hill that was directly behind an apartment complex.  Engine 7 had to back into a position at the base of the hill to feed a line over a retention wall in order to gain access.  Nothing spectacular but better than nothing.
