Evergreen Park Pirsch featured in ad

Firegeezer.com occasionally posts an entry entitled “Looking Back” where he displays a magazine ad from Fire Engineering Magazine which appeared in the 1950s. Recently, the ad from April of 1957, represented the Peter Pirsch & Sons of Kenosha, WI. In the ad was a drawing showing a mid-ship quint from Evergreen Park.

An article about the Pirsch in 1981, several years before the company shut down, can be found HERE.

Evergreen Park Fire Department 1965 Pirsch mid-mount quint

Bill Friedrich supplied us with an image of the unit as deployed in Evergreen Park matching their yellow rigs. This 1965 mid-ship quint had a 750-GPM pump, 250 gallons of water, and a 65' ladder. This 'modern' photo of Truck 32 features a Federal Q siren and two 888 warning lights on the fenders in addition to a roof beacon.

3-11 in Schiller Park 1-27-11

The Schiller Park Fire Department responded to a fire at the Horse Shoe Inn at 9639 Irving Park road before 4:00 this morning. The tavern is located a half block west of the fire station and arriving companies were met by thick smoke blowing across the street. Little fire was visible initially, but within minutes of the fire department’s arrival, flames were coming out of the front door. The fire was upgraded to a 2-11 bringing mutual aid from several neighboring departments in MABAS Division 20 including Franklin Park, Norwood Park, Leyden Township, Northlake, River Grove, Elmwood Park, Rosemont, and Stone Park.. Firefighters reportedly pulled a victim from the building with a gunshot wound to the head who was transported to the hospital by medics. The stubborn fire travelled through the older building requiring extensive overhaul and the alarm was elevated to a 3-11 shortly after 5AM bringing companies from Des Plaines, Melrose Park, Bensenville, and Park Ridge.

While this fire was active, the Maywood Fire Department, also in MABAS Division 20, requested a box alarm for a house fire in their town that occupied additional Division 20 companies.

A brief article can be found HERE and HERE.

Firegeezer.com has a thorough article on the fire HERE.

Steve Redick and Larry Shapiro both took in the fire and will have images to add later today.

Goodbye to an icon of photography – Kodachrome 1935-2010

Firegeezer.com has an article describing the final days of the legendary slide film Kodachrome. The last roll will be processed next week. Check out the article HERE about Dwayne’s Photo, in Parsons, Kansas, which was the last lab to offer processing for Kodachrome having purchased enough chemicals from Kodak to allow them to continue processing the film through the end of 2010.

During the past week Dwayne’s employees kept the last Kodachrome processing machine operating 24 hours a day filling orders as the announced deadline for accepting orders of December 30 approached.  On Thursday Dwayne’s received 18 bags of U. S. mail and 500 packages via FedEx, enough work to keep them processing around the clock until sometime next week.

… a railroad worker who had driven from Arkansas to pick up 1,580 rolls of film that he had just paid $15,798 to develop

… an artist who had driven directly here after flying from London to Wichita, Kan., on her first trip to the United States to turn in three rolls of film and shoot five more before the processing deadline

The story is well worth the read!

Been there, done that, get the t-shirt to prove it!
