The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office says six people were killed in a house fire just after midnight in rural Dixon. The initial call came in as a report of smoke in the basement. Multiple agencies responded to the fully engulfed house in the 200 block of North Miami Drive where all six occupants in the house died. The Illinois Fire Marshal and Illinois State Police are helping in the investigation.


update: Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle says the six people killed overnight in a house fire in rural Dixon included two parents, four children, a cat and a dog. Autopsies began around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Ogle County Coroner Louis Finch says the bodies were so badly burned he will rely on dental records to identify the victims. Captain Isaac Dimming of the Dixon Rural Fire Department said significant flames kept firefighters from entering the home. The bodies of the six victims weren’t discovered until the fire was brought under control.


update: Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle released the names of the family killed in a rural Dixon fire Tuesday morning. Investigators say at 12:01 a.m. they got a call from 17-year-old Ethan Shaw who said he was trapped in his basement bedroom which was filling with smoke.

Several departments arrived on scene to the home fully engulfed in flames. When the fire was out, the six victims were found inside. The sheriff’s office says those victims were 39-year-old Timothy Shaw, 37-year-old Melissa Shaw, 17-year-old Ethan Shaw, 15-year-old LeAnne Shaw, 12-year-old Hailey Shaw, and 11-year-old Dylan Shaw.

Investigators say the Shaw family died of smoke inhalation, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
