Box Alarm fire near Des Plaines, 12-2-22

The North Maine FPD along with firefighters from Des Plaines and Niles were sent to a somewhat remote location in unincorporated Des Plaines for a house fire Friday morning (12-2-22). The large house at 9609 Reding Circle sits on a small lake off of Golf Road and I-294. Reding Circle is a narrow, private road with minimal access.

As smoke was reported on arrival, the alarm was upgraded to a working fire, and it wasn’t long before flames were venting through the roof of the vacant house. Companies made an interior attack and were pulled out to transition into a defensive attack with aerial operations. Three trucks were put to work with master streams; Des Plaines Tower 61, Niles Tower 2, and Glenview Truck 14. North Maine Engine 1, Niles Engine 3, and Prospect Heights Squad 9 were pumping. Truck 2 was on their own hydrant.

The alarm was upgraded again to a MABAS Box Alarm, although most of those mutual aid companies were not put to work.

House fire in Des Plaines, 9-26-22

A Des Plaines firefighter working in the fire prevention bureau spotted smoke from the eaves of a house at 501 S. Mt. Prospect Road Monday just before 2PM. After speaking with individuals outside the home, he called RED Center to report the house fire. He then entered the home to convince two people to evacuate and subsequently reentered to complete a secondary search.

The working fire response brought three engines, two chief officers, and four Des Plaines ambulances, a chief, truck, and ambulance from Mount Prospect, a chief and truck from Prospect Heights, a Wheeling engine, and a Niles truck. Des Plaines Battalion 61 and Truck 61 were both training at NIPSTA and responded from there.

The origin of the fire was believed to be a second story bathroom, but the entire second floor attic space of the split-level home was involved when suppression companies arrived.

House fire in Des plaines, 6-14-22

Excerpts from the journal-topics.com:

The Des Plaines Fire Department responded to a single-family home just south of Oakton Street at 3:14 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and arrived to find heavy smoke coming out of the home. The only occupant had escaped unharmed. Crews from multiple area departments assisted at the scene while also battling 95-degree heat.

After the blaze at 1817 Lee St., fire officials pointed to an already problematic window air conditioner unit plugged into an extension cord as the cause of the fire.

The fire department’s investigation concluded that the fire started at the center and rear rooms of the house. At one point, a power line burned away from its connection to the home, creating an electrical hazard as the live power line fell in the backyard and across a metal fence.

The Red Cross was contacted to help the resident with relocation from the now-uninhabitable home, with damage estimates over $100,000.

Des Plaines Fire Department news

Excerpts from the journal-topics.com:

The Des Plaines Fire Department has begun the process of hiring 10 new firefighter/paramedics to bring up-to-date its staffing levels.

To do that, the department will implement a new physical ability test for candidates that’s deemed fairer than the previous exam, addresses potential legal challenges, and possibly open the door for more women to join the force. The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), is used by nearly every suburban fire department. It’s a nationally accepted exam of a candidate’s physical ability to perform job tasks related to firefighting and it’s a certified test unlike the one previously used by the city.

The physical ability test, for example, takes into account pulling a hose by hand that’s filled with water and climbing a ladder with a hose. In some instances, females may not be able to perform the same physical exercises men do, but are otherwise qualified. The CPAT test is designed to make the exam fairer for every applicant no matter their gender and to remove any charges of discrimination. If it’s determined that the new test is not working satisfactorily it can always return to the former test as long as it becomes certified.

The deadline to become a Des Plaines firefighter/paramedic is March 17. Other exams such as written and psychological tests will be given to candidates. Those accepted by the Des Plaines Police & Fire Board of Commissioners are placed on an eligibility list with their test results. When the department wants to hire someone they choose from that list, which is good for two years.

Fatal fire in Des Plaines, 1-27-21 (more)

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

A blaze that killed a Des Plaines woman and her four children one year ago was caused by two electrical cords that had been improperly altered and connected. One cord was part of a space heater that had been the focus of the investigation from the start. The other was a heavy-duty extension cord plugged into a wall outlet. The space heater was inside the family’s second-floor apartment near a stairway. The extension cord was plugged into an outlet in the kitchen.

The fire occurred in the apartment building on the 700 block of West Oakton Street. The building originally was a single-family house but had been converted into apartments. Killed in the Jan. 27, 2021, blaze were Cithlaly Zamudio, 25, and daughters Renata Espinosa, 6, Genesis Espinosa, 5, Allison Espinosa, 3, and Grace Espinosa, 1.

The fire, which began about 10 a.m., trapped the victims inside because there was no safe exit other than the stairs. Two other occupants of the building got out safely with help from police and a passerby.

Forensic electrical engineers hired by an insurance company and an attorney for the family’s estate examined the building and debris inside in June as part of their investigations. They concluded the spliced cords caused the fire. As manufactured, the male end of the heater’s electrical cord and the female end of the extension cord didn’t match. The ends had been cut off so the wires inside the cords could be spliced.

The resulting electrical flash could be seen in surveillance video from a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago facility across the street from the family’s home.

Strings of Christmas lights inside the apartment were improperly wired to each other, too, but they likely weren’t to blame for the fire.

The building where the fire occurred remains unoccupied and boarded up.
