Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire 9-12-11

Chicago had a 2-11 Alarm for a fire at 3056 N. Milwaukee Avenue Monday morning.  The Chicago Tribune reports:

The fire broke out at 9:24 a.m. in the building at 3056 North Milwaukee Avenue and when firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was billowing from the basement and the ceiling appeared to be involved in the fire, according to fire department spokesman Larry Langford.

No one was in the two story building, which housed the bakery on the first floor and apartments on the second, Langford said.

Tim Olk and Steve Redick were at the scene. Steve submitted a video and Tim submitted several images.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm 9-11-11

Chicago had a commercial fire Sunday morning at 5614 W. Grand Avenue.

Steve Redick and Dan McInerney both took in the fire and submitted images.

Steve provided the following information:

This morning about 0600 a 2-11 alarm at 5614 Grand ave. A 1 sty commercial attached to a truss roof auto repair garage. I arrived a few minutes after the 2-11 was pulled…and some of the box alarm companies were still going to work. Squad 2 had no snorkel and both tower ladders (14 and 23) were in spares too. The fire was through the roof just before the first images and 2 separate collapses occurred while I was there…I didn’t get them on video or stills but notice just the roof came in..no other outward collapses of the parapets or bearing walls seem to have occurred. I wonder if there were fire cuts on the truss ends. Also got some shots of 43 stretching up a ground ladder to the roof of exposure 2 for a point of vantage operation. All in all an interesting fire…shift change was taking place at the same time so that’s why you see members in various states of dress. I am enclosing a link to a short video with radio traffic I shot as well…

Dan had the following comments:

This was a one story truss roof auto body shop. It looked 75×100, fire throughout. Exposure in sector 2 was a one story 25×100 with fire throughout as well.
These are of E117 and T35. E117 had 2 lines off I believe to the roof of the building driectly to the west of the exposure building operating from a point of vantage. T35 had their main to that roof as well.

Chicago 2-11 on Milwaukee Ave 2-9-11

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at Andy’s Deli at 5442 N. Milwaukee Avenue Wednesday evening. First arriving companies found fire in the commercial occupancy and initially had trouble securing a water supply due to several frozen hydrants in the area. The fire attack went defensive partially due to concerns about the integrity of the roof and a 2-11 Alarm was requested. Two tower ladders and Squad 2’s Snorkel applied water from their buckets and Truck 55 had their main in the air with a master stream in place. A special call was made for the Mobile Ventilation Unit (9-2-3) from Engine 106’s quarters and it was put to work in Sector 1 to push the fire to the rear and through the roof to allow companies to get at it since much of the roof had remained intact.

Steve Redick took in the fire as did Larry Shapiro. A gallery of images by Larry Shapiro can be seen HERE.

A gallery link to images by Steve Redick is HERE.

Here are a few images from the scene.

The Chicago Tribune has a brief article HERE.

Since the fire was in the center of the building and the roof was largely intact, the MVU 9-2-3 was setup in front of the building to fan the fire so that firefighters could attack it without entering the premises. Larry Shapiro photo

Engine 83 brought Light Wagon 9-1-3 to the scene, as one is due at each 2-11 alarm fire in the city. Towards the end of the event, it was brought to Sector 1 and put to work offering firefighters greater visibility to direct handlines deep into the building from the sidewalk. Larry Shapiro photo

Chicago Fire Department 2-11 Andy's Deli 2-9-11

As companies began to break down their lines, most encountered hose with water that had frozen. They had to wrestle with the rigid hose to get it onto the engines and in some cases along the aerial bed of ladders for the trip back to quarters. There, companies repacked with new hose and dealt with the frozen hose in whatever manner they could. Larry Shapiro photo

Chicago 2-11 2-8-11

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire in a commercial building at 1008 S. Kilbourn Avenue this morning around 8AM. They encountered fire in the center of a one-story, 100 x 125 brick building which burned through the roof. The fire was upgraded to a 2-11 Alarm before being brought under control.

The Chicago Tribune has a brief article HERE which states among other things that …

The building, a factory, was occupied at the time the blaze started, but everyone got out and no injuries were reported.

Jeff Rudolph was at the scene and submitted several images which depict the cold temperatures and the large volume of snow on the ground that firefighters had to contend with.

Chicago Still & Box 2-4-11

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire in a mattress store at 6019 N. Lincoln Avenue Friday night and fought a relatively small interior fire. The building had a bow string truss roof but the fire did not extend past the ceiling. The strip center where this fire occurred was the site of a previous fire a number of years ago. Upon checking for extension in the neighboring property, firefighters found charring from a previous fire along the rafters.

Truck 56 had their main to the roof, and since they are due to take delivery of a 2010 Spartan/Crimson 103′ aerial to replace their Seagrave 100′ aerial, this might play out to be the last fire for this rig before it heads to the spare fleet.

Larry Shapiro arrived as the Still & Box was struck out and took a few images of the scene. A small gallery can be viewed HERE.

Although not visible from the outside at night, this strip center has a bow string truss roof. The fire was contained to the interior before it was able to weaken the roof supports. Larry Shapiro photo

Most of the visible damage to the interior of the store and the merchandise is from heat and smoke. The fire was located in the rear of the building. Larry Shapiro photo

Alsip fights fire during the blizzard

The Alsip Fire Department requested a Full Still Alarm for a fire Tuesday night in the middle of the blizzard at 11902 S. Cicero Avenue. Due to the blizzard conditions, companies coming from the north could not make it over the big bridge which spans a few railroad tracks. The bridge runs from 115th St. to 119th St. on Cicero Ave.

The building measured 50×75, housed a carwash, and was the scene of a Box Alarm fire last year. Companies did not have problems getting water but did have problems with the wind and snow, making Cicero Avenue almost impassable. Mutual aid was from the Garden Homes Fire Protection District with a engine, the Palos Fire Protection District with a truck, and the Crestwood Fire Department with a truck. No one was inside when the fire happened.

Dennis McGuire, Jr. braved the elements and took in the fire. He submitted several images.
