Schaumburg Fire Department Capt. Dan Johnson has been promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations effective immediately. Johnson most recently served the department as a captain and a shift commander.

Deputy Chief Johnson will be responsible for emergency scene operations, which include ensuring adequate personnel and equipment are present; coordinating essential emergency tasks; and ensuring personnel accountability and scene safety, plus other responsibilities within the department.

He has been in the fire service since 1992 holding several positions since joining the Schaumburg Fire Department in 1998 including firefighter/paramedic, lieutenant, captain, and shift commander.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Service Management from Southern Illinois University and is a state certified Chief Fire Officer in addition to being a member of the Schaumburg Technical Rescue and Hazardous Materials Response Teams.

Johnson replaces Deputy Chief Bill Spencer who is retiring after 12 years in the position and more than 35 years with the department. Spencer has been instrumental in the development of multiple comprehensive response plans, adjustments in responses due to I-90 reconstruction, as well as advancements in EMS equipment and policies.

Lt. John Schneidwind has been promoted to captain. He is a 28-year veteran of the department having served in such roles as public education, CPR training, and special teams.

Lt. Ted Pellus, a 30-year veteran of the department has also retired. Firefighter/paramedic Jeff Englund a 23-year veteran of the department, and Firefighter/paramedic James Sheehan an 18-year veteran have been promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
