Buffalo Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from vbg.org:

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department (BGFD) received Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) for meeting the criteria established through the CFAl’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program. BGFD is one of fewer than 325 agencies worldwide to achieve “Internationally Accredited Agency” status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Inc. (CPSE).

CFAl’s accreditation model is centered around a comprehensive self-assessment consisting of 250 different performance indicators that cover the span of fire and emergency service operations. Using these indicators, BGFD assessed its current performance and compared it to industry best practices. Accredited agencies are often described as being community-focused, data-driven, outcome-focused, strategic-minded, well organized, properly equipped, properly staffed, and trained.

The BGFD’s accreditation journey began in 2019 and involved the compilation of nearly 600 pages of assessments and analyses along with over 350 different reference documents. CFAl’s review team conducted a comprehensive review of BGFD’s assessment and provided its recommendations. The accreditation status was approved unanimously.

Box alarm fire in Palatine, 3-19-23

Palatine firefighters responded for a report of smoke on the third floor of an apartment building at 12 E Dundee Quarter late Sunday afternoon (3-19-23).  Palatine police officers reported smoke and then flames from the roof and the response was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire.

Palatine crews made an interior attack with two lines on the third floor and performed searches of the building. Unable to get ahead of the volume of fire overhead and in the mansard roof in addition to deteriorating conditions, firefighters were evacuated from the building to transition to a defense attack. As personnel was exiting the building, a Mayday was called by a firefighter on a balcony that was unable to exit via the interior. He successfully descended a ground ladder.

The fire circumvented the fire wall and eventually made it’s way into the adjacent building which sustained heavy damage to the roof and third floor. There were multiple collapses of the original building.

Palatine Tower 85, Buffalo Grove Tower 25, and Arlington Heights Tower 1 all deployed master streams.

Of interest – police officers and firefighters giving back

Excerpts from patch.com:

For the sixth straight year, Buffalo Grove police officers and firefighters gave back to the community with the annual “Shopping With Heroes” event held on Dec. 10 at Target in Wheeling,

Donations from the police and fire departments, along with generous donations from the “Temple Chai Guys” men’s group from Temple Chai and other anonymous donors, made the event possible.

The department identified 16 local children in need to provide gifts for – children who had faced personal or financial family hardships. Police officers and firefighters volunteered their time to shop with the youth. The children were guided to choose educational items along with their other desired gifts, with the remainder spent on gifts for family and loved ones.

After shopping, the children were brought back to the police station for gift wrapping, pizza and treats. The treat bags and wrapping paper were donated by Target.

Trench rescue in Buffalo Grove, 12-12-22 (more)

Excerpts from cbsnews.com:

The family of a 27-year-old Elmwood Park man was grieving Tuesday, a day after the sewer repair worker was killed when the trench he was working in collapsed on top of him in Buffalo Grove.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the circumstances. Unfortunately, OSHA says the site did not appear to have the necessary safety precautions to keep the tragic accident Monday from happening.

Family said Zaremba became the co-owner of a company called Rooter Solutions, which is the company for which he was performing sewer repair work on Monday. he was one of three people working at the site of the excavation when it collapsed.

OSHA records show at least 20 workers nationwide have died in trench collapses since December 2020. Two of those cases were in Illinois, and one was in Indiana.

GoFundMe created Tuesday afternoon says the family is in shock. It reads:

“It is with great sadness and disbelief that we announce the sudden and very unexpected passing of Nikodem Zaremba ‘Smerf’ at only 27 years old.

“Anyone who knew Nikodem knows what a hardworking, loving, and kind soul he was. He loved and cared deeply for everyone around him whether it was his family, friends, or co-workers. Family was the utmost importance to him, they were his primary motivation in all of his endeavors. To Niku? friends he was the fun-loving, adventurous goofball who always had your back. To his parents he was their first born son. To his brothers he was the oldest, a strong role model, and forever friend. To his fiancé he was her everything, best friend, soulmate, and future husband. He will be ever-loved.

“The family is understandably shocked by this loss and unfortunately not prepared for all that is happening at this time. During this time they will need help with funeral expenses, daily living expenses, mortgage, utilities, and all of the other necessities. The funds will help out tremendously.”

Zaremba’s company had no inspection history because it was just created in August of this year. Buffalo Grove said a permit was properly issued for this work back in November.
