Blue Island Fire Department news

Excerpts from Fox32chicago.com:

A junkyard fire in Blue Island consumed 40 to 50 vehicles Saturday and brought down a house. Over 14 fire companies from the surrounding area responded to the blaze about 3:50 a.m. in a junkyard near 131st Street and Kedzie Avenue. The fire raged for over two hours and the flames were extinguished close to 6 a.m., with the last hot spots going out around 9 a.m.

No one was injured in the fire. The Illinois Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.

From the Blue Island Firefighters 3547 Facebook page:

Overnight Blue Island was dispatched for the outside fire at 13100 Kedzie. Upon arrival crews encountered multiple different yards of cars on fire along with a 2 story structure. The alarm was immediately upgraded. Crews worked throughout the night into the morning to contain the fire. Thanks to all surrounding agencies for their support.

Blue Island Fire Department news

Excerpts from blueisland.org:

The Blue Island Fire Department announced their public protection classification, established by the Insurance Services Office, improved from 4 to 3. This is great news for the community!

The ISO rating is a report card for fire services that determines how well a local fire department can protect its community and homes. It correlates risk for insurance companies providing coverage to homes and businesses within a zip code and affects property insurance rates.

Several key areas are evaluated for an ISO rating:
• Quality of fire department – Staffing, training and proximity of firehouse
• Water supply – Availability and prevalence of fire hydrants
• Quality of an area’s dispatch center
• Community outreach – fire prevention and safety courses

The ISO rating is measured on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the best rating. Blue Island Fire Department is one of 3,500 departments in the nation with a 3 rating. Blue Island Fire Chief Dan Reda explained the decreased rating was a result of improved dispatch operations and increased focus on training and operational efficiency. A lower ISO rating also helps department’s secure federal and state fire funding.

Restaurant fire in Blue Island 8-24-18

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The owners of the Maple Tree Inn restaurant in Blue Island’s historic district vowed to reopen after an early morning fire Friday caused extensive damage to the business. The call came in at about 2:45 a.m., and firefighters from several surrounding communities assisted in battling the blaze, according to Blue Island Fire Chief Dan Reda.

The owners’ family lives in an apartment above the restaurant, 13301 S. Olde Western Ave., and they were able to escape the fire safely. The building sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage. The fire was out by 6 a.m. and crews were working on a ruptured gas line.

Dive Box in Blue Island, 6-18-17

This from Eric Haak:

Here are some images I took at Blue Island’s Dive Box at Ashland Avenue over the Calumet River on Sunday morning (6/18). Don’t know if the original call was someone who had jumped in from the bridge or just someone who fell in. Companies worked the area for several hours but came up with nothing at the time of me writing this. Thought I would share images of some rigs and equipment that were on scene.
