3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-1-17 (more)

An interesting historical note about the 3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-1-17, there was a 2-11 Alarm fire in the same building on April 24, 1983. We have not found any of our contributors that has photos of that fire.

Chicago FD extra alarm listing for April of 1983

This from Steve Redick:

Thursday morning (at the peak of morning rush hour) 2945 Milwaukee Ave. Fire was in a 2-story furniture store, with the top floor completely closed to the outside by brick veneer. Heavy fire throughout, burned through and collapsed what I believe was a bowstring truss roof. Photo conditions were tough as there were areas of bright sun and deep shade. Finally got to oberve squad 2’s new “snorkel” fully extended and in operation as well as some tower ladder operations and the spare Snorkel. Also interesting to see Engine 69 hooked up to a hydrant in front of Engine 91’s former quarters at 3000 N Elbridge very close to the rear of the fire building. Here is a sample of the hundreds of images, all can be seen plus the video here:

3-11 Alarm fire in Chicago, 6-1-17

Chicago police officers were sent to investigate a burglar alarm around 7:30AM on Thursday (6/1/17) at 2945 N. Milwaukee Avenue where they discovered a fire inside the furniture store. Firefighters arrived to smoke and fire in the two-story, 100×125 brick building with a partial bow-truss roof and glass storefront. Companies were eventually pulled from the building and initiated a defensive attack. The alarm was raised to a 2-11 and then a 3-11 with elevated master streams from Tower Ladder 21, Tower Ladder 23, Squad 2A, and 6-6-1, the reserve Snorkel.

Multiple contributors were at the scene and will be submitting images and video.

Chicago 3-11 Alarm fire, 9-12-16 (more)

This from Steve Redick:

The parade of dollar store fires continues. This occurred on September 12, at Jackson & Kedzie. The construction was described as light weight, and I believe this same mall was burned several years ago as well. Access was somewhat difficult as this was right by a major CTA bus barn and the Eisenhower Expressway causing a real traffic snarl. At the height of the fire TL 5, TL14, Squad 2, Eng 44’s deck gun, 661, the turret wagon and the hose wagon were all in use.
Squad 2’s Snorkel was enveloped in a fireball when a portion of the roof collapsed and the members were injured although I believe in minor fashion. The rig became dead in the water. They used the winch from the pie-wagon piece of Squad 2 to try to pull the Snorkel away from the building … an interesting operation to watch. The photo of the reserve Snorkel and the new TL 14 depicts the oldest and newest rigs in the fleet working together … kinda neat. All of the images and the video can be viewed here.
