Yeah bill they are there but there’s only 2 boxes and one of the fake snorkels and they’re sitting in the very back corner of the lot at Wrightwood and York turn on to Wrightwood and go all the way back to work right would makes that turn right and they’re sitting right there against the fence in the very back

If the rigs are not at Fleet Management as of yet, I would strongly suggest that you go to 776 N York Road in Elmhurst. That would be on the west side of the street about 3 to 4 blocks south of Grand Avenue. There is a good chance of the new squads being there. That is Rosenbauer’s Chicago area representative, TransChicago Truck Group. If you are approaching from the south they are not more then about a half mile north of 290 and Lake Street which is just south of the 290. They are about 2 blocks north of Mariano’s.
I am not saying that the squads are there, but there is a very good chance they are.

I seen one of the new squads!!! Today heading south on I-290 & I-390. No makings. So one is in the chicago area!!!!

Okay , so as the end user of these rigs all I care about is that they work and are reliable because the rigs we currently have are in such bad shape they shouldn’t even be on the street. I don’t care how they look in pictures just how they perform. The city doesn’t take care of these rigs for real. they are falling apart literally falling off the frames. I don’t mean to sound so bleak but its really old to little to late.

The grill is a Rosenbauer logo. It may light up like Ferrara does.

The Hendrickson snorkels had the crew boxs behind the cab as well.

The question now is will they be in town in time for Thanksgiving, for Christmas, or for New Years? Either way once they arrive in town I wouldn’t be surprised if it would be a month or two before they are ready to be put in service due to outfitting, testing the rigs especially the new Snorkels and training on them.
If there is one company that I would assign the first rig to in order to break it in and to see just how well they hold up, it would be Squad 5. They had been the busiest of the squads (at least a few years ago) and have the largest running district by far. There is no question that new rigs assigned to Squad 7 will be the slowest and they will be show pieces at the airport more then anything else. I really wonder how often they will be using the Snorkel at the airport? Well that was Fleet Management’s call.

I like the new Squads. I also like the non painted roll up doors. One thing is that I don’t care for the chevrons on the bumpers. I hope they hold up. I rode with them a couple of times and they have big districts and most runs are not around the corner. Chicago like Milwaukee has some pretty rough streets. Also I hope they buy more e-one rigs from what I saw it looks like they improved on the quality of their products. John

Rich S, the new squads are not Crimson they are Rosenbauer. To my understanding the contracts with Spartan ERV (that’s the new name for Crimson) have expired and now the city has to put out a new request for bids for engines and trucks and possibly tower ladders. The three new E-One engines are part of the order for O’Hare from two years ago. It was for up to five engines. The first two were high capacity foam units for Engines 9 and 10 and the remaining three were conventional engines for the city. The three E-One tower ladders were part of an add-on order through a Houston/Galveston area purchasing consortium. I don’t have much information other than Chicago was able to get a good deal by ordering through them. It sounds as if they were able to piggy back the order. Don’t mistake what I am saying to mean that they ordered through the Houston Fire Department. It is interesting because Houston uses different specs than Chicago and they have started ordering engines from Spartan ERV. They even have a Spartan ERV tower ladder. Dallas, Texas has been purchasing apparatus almost exclusively from Spartan ERV for quite a few years now and apparently they are happy them. Dallas has some tillered aerial ladders and two mid-mounted tower ladders from Spartan ERV.
I have no idea when Chicago is going to put out a request for bids but there is no question that they are overdue for ordering engines and trucks.

The look nice except the non-painted roll up doors on the body’s. (you would think that after waiting 5 years for them to be built they would be painted). And again no 888 light disappointing to say the least. I have to be suspect that these being the first ever built by this company (not a real Snorkel just looks the same) I anticipate several issues with these and the Box rigs. The problems with the Trucks and poor service is exactly why the city cancelled all contracts with Crimson. But we are in such bad need of new rigs we kept these going. foolish in my opinion.

They look sharp.
I would just like to mention that the original snorkle squads had a crew cab added by the shops about two years after they were delivered.
It was behind the cab and you had to walk past the boom to get to it.

I think the units look good but I wish they would have painted the roll up doors red. But just my opinion.

The squad companies in Chicago area 6 man companies. Officer and 3 FF’so in the front rig (Box rig) and 2 FF’s in the rear rig (Snorkel)

When will these new squads be delivered and where will the other firefighters sit in the snorkel truck since it’s a two door cab without a jump seat

  The 6 personnel on a squad ride 4 in the box and 2 in the snorkel, so you aren’t really losing seats.

I do believe that’s a Integrated Light on the Center of the grille. I forgot to add my thanks for the picture. I noticed it on the another of the Squad picture from Last week or so.

Also looks like the rigs have an integrated light in the center of the grille, didn’t note it at first, but it’s hard to tell if it’s not just the Rosenbauer logo or something like that.

It will be interesting to see how they hold up compare to the Original Snorkel(s). I strongly hope someone will be able to do full video/photo shot sometimes once they get to Chicago.

Thanks for sharing this, they really look like toolboxes on wheels with the big compartments and short cabs, reminds me a bit of the original IHC harvester rigs.
