Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from fox32chicago.com:

Two boys were injured, one critically, in an arson attempt Sunday night at a residence in the Englewood neighborhood after an object was ignited and thrown near the rear of a home around 11:36 p.m. in the 6100 block of South Carpenter Street.

A man and four children were able to exit the burning residence unharmed but told firefighters that a child was still inside the home. Firefighters recovered a 4-year-old boy from the residence. He was transported to Comer Children’s Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation where he was listed in critical condition.

A 9-year-old boy suffering from smoke inhalation was also taken to Comer where he was listed in good condition.

The Chicago Fire Department is investigating.

Fire service news

Excerpts from futurism.com:

A parking garage in Manhattan collapsed on Tuesday afternoon, killing one person and injuring five more. Among the New York Fire Department’s assets was a Dalmatian-spotted robodog.

In a video posted on social media that has since gone viral, the robot can be seen walking into the collapsed structure. But moments after it started its climb through the rubble, the robodog simply fell over onto its side, lying motionless on top of a piece of concrete.

Spot has self-righting capabilities, and it was later confirmed that the FDNY robo-Dalmatian did locate the remains of the one garage employee who sadly died in the accident, so the robot did do a much better job than the video suggests.

The FDNY became the first fire agency in the country to purchase several Spot robodogs from Boston Dynamics last year, which cost $75,000 each.

The use of these quadrupeds by the city’s police department, however, proved far more controversial, with the agency cutting short its contract with Boston Dynamics due to mounting pressure from critics back in 2021. Despite the significant backlash, the NYPD reinstated its robodogs just last week.

House fire in Crystal Lake, 4-21-23

This from Tyler Tobolt:

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department requested MABAS Box 5-371 to the box alarm level for a working fire in a vacant, two-story house on 4/21/23 around 5pm. Heavy smoke and fire was showing from the rear of the house on arrival and command initiated defensive operations only. Tender operations were needed since there were no hydrants in the area.
