Fatal fire in Chicago, 5-25-22

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

A young girl died after a fire broke out in an apartment building Wednesday morning in Roseland on the Far South Side. The child was found under debris in the bedroom of a second-floor unit of a courtyard building at 11035 S. King Dr. She was 2 or 3 years old. Firefighters tried to resuscitate the child but she was pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Firefighters had responded to several calls of a heavy fire coming from an apartment and a person possibly trapped inside.

Two adults from the unit had escaped when firefighters arrived. The rear door of the unit appeared to be locked and someone may have jumped to safety from a window. There were no working smoke detectors inside.

The apartment was full of a lot of debris — furniture, objects that made it difficult to conduct the search.

Fire service news

Excerpts from postcrescent.com:

Pierce Manufacturing’s lobby was filled last week with potential employees during the company’s second hiring event  in an effort to fill 200 new positions that’ll be created by an expansion of its plants in Neenah and Fox Crossing. Those jobs include welders, painters, electricians, assemblers, and material coordinators.

Pierce announced in November it would start work on a 90,000-square-foot expansion of its Fox Crossing location and a 60,000-square-foot expansion of its Neenah facility. The company said the expansions, expected to be done in the fall, are needed to help it keep up with global demand for its trucks.

Job offers had been extended to more than 50 people within an hour of the start of last week’s hiring event. The company hired about 60 people at at a similar event in October. While the expansion isn’t expected to be completed until fall, new hires will not have to wait until it is completed to begin working at the factory.

Although supply shortages are affecting manufacturers across the nation, Pierce’s productivity hasn’t seen any dramatic changes because of it.

Melrose Park Fire Department history

From Mike Summa for #TBT:

For TBT – This truck belonged to the Melrose Park Fire Dept.  I know this is a Hazmat Unit, as indicated on the trailer.  The trailer is pulled by an IHC Mini Pumper.  And that is all I know.  So any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

3-Alarm fire in Park Ridge, 5-24-22

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

Dozens of residents at a Park Ridge condo complex are displaced after a fire late Tuesday significantly damaged the building and left it uninhabitable.

Just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, the Park Ridge Fire Department responded to a fire at Bristol Court Condominiums at 200 Thames Parkway.

When crews arrived, firefighters saw heavy fire blowing out of a window in a top floor unit and was quickly spreading onto the roof.

Multiple people were trapped and in need of rescue, and the building was not equipped with sprinklers. Four residents were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. One firefighter was also transported to the hospital for minor injuries and has been released.

The fire was extinguished at approximately 3:30 a.m.
