  We have 4 Squad companies tasked with Special Operations such as Technical Rescue- Rope,Trench,Con Space,Collapse,Water Rescue, Extrications, Working Fires. These vehicles carry a large assortment of tools and equipment to handle these incidents. The 55’ articulating boom “Snorkel “ is used as an elevated master stream in areas where a conventional Tower Ladder will not fit such as alleys and vacant lots in our neighborhoods. The Squads are manned with 6 members, the box rig has 3 FF’s and the Officer and the Snorkel has 2 FF’s these rigs go together for all runs. The manpower can be split as needed depending upon the tactical needs.

  The two piece squads have been a tradition in chicago since the Snorkel squads in the mid-60s. One of the main reasons that we utilize a 2 piece system is because we need a walk-in box for dive calls or tech rescue call to get dressed on the way. chicago still likes the mobility and flexibility of the snorkel so instead of compromising with one or the other we just used two rigs
