According to a post on this site from November last year, Rockford took out a 3.2 million dollar loan for 3 quints. It also said that after 7 years they will become spares, so that means they aren’t leasing.

I thought Rockford took delivery of 3 quints

I also believe Rockford has moved away from the conventional lease arrangement that was in place when they initially were buying to get out from under their fleet nightmare.

Ladders 5 and 9 were leased from Pierce. 9 has been sold to Cherry Valley to replace an E-One tower that was pulled from service. 5 will be going back to Pierce. Rumor was another suburban area department wanted it but were warned to stay away as it has been troublesome maintenance wise. I believe Ladders 1 and 2 were a bit different arrangement, L1 will be retained as a spare. A replacement for L2 is supposedly on order or will be soon, as well as three new Pierce engines for 3,7 and 1.

yes I do remember being at the Chicagoland emergency vehicle show in north aurora years back and a Rockford pierce was there and they told me that they will lease them from now on I think it is very smart I know many florida depts. lease them and love it I don’t know what is covered or not but if it is working that’s great

I believe Rockford is leasing all their Fire Department vehicles. I know prior to the 2012 apparatus purchases their fleet was in shambles, high repair costs, lots of down time for apparatus ext.
I believe the lease is for 7 years. Yeah now the lease is up on the 2012 vehicles which includes the three Velocity ladders and a Saber engine.

I’m curious to know what Rockford will do with the Pierce Velocity ladders that these are replacing. Will they be moved to reserve or spare status? Those Pierce Velocity’s aren’t very old. Did they already full apart?

There is no tactical benefit to the rear-mount, single axle Ascendant TL. It has a smaller basket that has a limited capacity for removal of victims; IE- A 750lb payload vs 1000lb and about half the size. Also, the waterway is essentially a ladder pipe on an aerial with a basket attached as opposed to a waterway on the bucket itself. This prohibits the basket from being used to scrub at grade. This means it can only shoot water from above as opposed to being brought down to the street and having the versatility of a 1000gpm movable ground monitor. From Pierce’s own sales pitch: “for those of you who would rather ride than climb or for those of you in weight restrictive states who could never even consider a heavy, tandem axle aerial platform” and “For those of you that want more than just a ladder yet desire a smaller, lighter weight platform basket with lower acquisition costs and less cost of ownership”. It negates the purpose of having a true tower ladder (or ladder tower if you want to be technical) but there are plenty of departments that will take the bait and buy it because it “looks cool!” or because they literally buy the BS that they can get a ladder tower without having to pay for a ladder tower.

I just wish someone in Illinois would get an ascendant 110 ft tower but the 107 ft is gaining a lot of depts. I love it
