  Don’t think you will see a drone team anytime soon – when a governmental body wants to fly drones, they must have TWO qualified pilots on the flight scene.

  Great questions Bill, as I was wondering the same thing about who would respond with those specialty apparatus and how daily checks and P.M. are performed. I believe that the MABAS HQ in Wheeling has staff available to perform checks and P.M. while the IL-1 USAR members are on a rotating call list for responses .

  It’s interesting that they now have another special operations rig for the cutting teams. I understand it is supposed to be used for civil disobedience incidents where protestors chain themselves together. It makes sense rather than taking one of the squads out of service. Who will operate the cutting equipment?
  At a major incident with a structural collapse the CFD also has 525 at the Special Operations warehouse. I thought 525 was supposed to be used for major collapse incidents in addition to the Collapse Rescue Unit 521 and the Lumber and Shoring rig 522. So what is the difference between the equipment on 525 and this new rig 527? Perhaps one of the local truck companies would be detailed to 527? Does the Special Operations warehouse have a few people stationed there to drive any of the rigs to an incident?
  Maybe they would have Truck 33 or Engine 49 respond to the warehouse if the incident is after hours. They are the nearest station to the garage. This is pure speculation as I don’t know if Special Operations has anyone assigned there on 24 hour basis.

  Any chance a specialized drone unit could see deployment soon? I imagine there are numerous uses for such a team.

  Also anybody knows if there’s any reason why all the recently purchased special duty rigs (like the air bottle trucks, Midway mass casualty) came in the all-red livery? Looks a bit like it’s intentional as there wasn’t a single exception for a couple years now.

  Wow a brand new unit. I thought that this kinda work (structural collapses, cutting victims out of rubble, machinery,…) is more or less the same stuff what the Collapse Rescues (and the Squads) were meant to do, so is there any real difference here, or this is some kinda supplement to the Collapse Rescue units?

  Cut teams are used when protesters chain their arms together inside PVC piping to make human chains, blocking street or maybe expressways. Probably easier to respond then the squads and keeps them free for fire and rescue responses.

  Curious what is a “cut team” and what equipment do they use that requires this vehicle instead of equipment carried on the Squads, 521, 522, or 525? Thanks in advance for the answer.
