Since this engine will go to Engine 3 which engine will the pierce go to? Which engine will get the one with the 1250 gallon tank?

The Pierce is on the Enforcer chassis. The proximity and relationship with the local E ONE and Pierce dealers was definitely a consideration. An additional E ONE engine with a 1250 gallon tank is also being purchased and funded as part of an agreement with the Naperville Fire Protection District. It should be approved at the next City Council meeting. It will be a Cyclone II chassis.

Thanks for the clarification. Naperville is certainly gaining experience with different brands of apparatus. They definitely stand out as a fire department. They expanded quite a bit when they built Stations 9 and 10 not that long ago. I must admit that opening Station 9 as a single truck house was a little unusual as most departments have been getting rid of them over the years and merging them with single engines like Chicago did. I believe that Tower 9 was orginally Tower 7. Things have been quite fluid the last several years in Naperville. They have been changing things around quite a bit including redesignating companies. For a while they ran with four trucks or quints and now they are down to three, two of which, Truck 1 and 5 are single truck houses. It is apparent they had to make some cutbacks in the fire companies that they were running.

It will come down to which dealer will subsidize the maintenance costs to get a further order from a large customer. The parts that will need work;i.e. Cummins motor, Allison transmission, merotor axles, hale pumps, whelen electronics, DuPont paint, etc. are all independently warrantied. Even the tires. The parts that the builders actually control is the body and cab and interiors typically dont need much attention.

Here’s the link to the post about the test.

They’re going to be using the dealers for general maintenance to take the load off of the fleet mechanics from public works, so they would have to drive the apparatus to the dealer, but I get what you’re saying about replacement parts and all that.
The number of mechanics in fleet services for public works has gone down from 3 to 6 in the past few years, and considering how big the city of Naperville is, they have a lot to deal with. The purpose of the test is more about maintenance costs than it is apparatus and manufacturer.

Good point but thanks to the internet, does it really matter where the physical dealer is located. If a builder wants the business and the department really wants to buy from a particular builder, they’ll find a way. At the same time, if a nearby salesman makes a pest of himself, will the municipality tell the guy to scram or just buy from him to shut him up.
Can’t help but think the latter takes place.

I believe the reason they’re doing the test is to see which dealer has a cheaper maintenance cost. I don’t think there’s a Spartan dealer close to them, and since Fire Service Inc (E-One) And Global Emergency Products (Pierce) are both very close to them, It would make sense to change apparatus so they are close to the dealer for maintenance. I wonder what Chassis they’ll get from Pierce. They haven’t really had too much variety in Chassis with E-One and Spartan in the past.

While variety may be fun for those of us who are apparatus fans, it likely causes headaches and blind rages because the equipment is different.
Both public and private bus fleets almost always buy from the same builder because standardization is most logical.
I doubt too many bus operators would buy 3 MCI’s and 3 PREVOST’s at the same time but rather one builder at once since that simplifies things and costs stay down

Naperville has hsad a lot of didfferant rigs pierce eone Spartan international for ambulances freightliner engines fords for cars dodge for cars they mix and match I would imagine that is hard on the mechanics having to keep track of all the parts but good news

It’s too bad that Chicago won’t do something like that and try out at least one or two Pierce engines alongside some E/Ones. Back in the late 1960’s and 70’s Chicago sometimes bought from several manufacturers during the same years. During the mid 2000’s the Los Angeles City Fire Department ordered an equal number of Pierce and Seagrave engines during the same year. During the recession they ordered engines from KME. They ordered a second batch as well however they are ordering engines from Pierce once again.

This will be going to Engine 3. The engine being built by Pierce has also just started production.

I believe this is part of their test between E-One and Pierce. I wonder what station this will go to. Looks like Bolingbrook is getting a new E-One engine as well.

Back to E-One…interesting. Wonder if they were having issues with their predominantly Crimson fleet.
