Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A Chicago street was renamed Saturday to honor Chicago Firefighter William F. Grant, 44, was killed in 2007 when his fire-truck collided with a school bus near 59th and Wells.

A street sign at 90th and Hoyne was unveiled in his honor by his three children, Kristen, Caroline, and Danny. The sign is outside the Grant’s home in the city’s Beverly neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

“This is a sign that commemorates your father’s life,” his brother Tom Grant said during a ceremony. “This is a sign of respect. This is a sign of admiration for a life well-lived. This is a sign of honor that was well earned. This is a sign of appreciation from a grateful community.”

Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said that he was honored to have known Grant, who was known as Bill or Billy. Santiago said Grant loved two things: his family and job.

Man dies after electrocution in Addison, 3-28-17

This from John Tulipano:

Firefighters from Addison and Lombard worked to free a victim who was trapped in a tree after being electrocuted in the area of Villa Avenue and Myrick today (3/28/17).

John Tulipano

A 51-year-old man died and another was critically injured Tuesday afternoon after they were shocked by power lines while trimming trees in an Addison backyard.

Jose Fulgencio-Hueramo, of Melrose Park, was pronounced shortly before noon at Glen Oaks Hospital in Glendale Heights.

At about 11 a.m., Fulgencio-Hueramo and another person were cutting limbs in a backyard near Villa Avenue and Myrick Avenue in Addison where both individuals made contact with the power lines.

One person was thrown from the ladder adjacent to the tree and landed on the ground. The second person was secured in the tree. When ComEd turned off power to the lines, firefighters got them down from the tree. One was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

“They were able to cut the power to the power lines, and at that point firefighters from Lombard and Addison went up there and were able to extricate the gentleman from the tree at that time,” said Joe Leone, the Addison fire chief.

Police said the victims appear to not be with a private tree-cutting service.

It was immediately unclear how the individuals got tangled in the power lines.

Harlem Roscoe Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from wifr.com:

A Roscoe family gets the surprise of a lifetime from their local fire department. While the family thought firefighters were responding to an emergency nearby, firefighters were really there to deliver some cash.

Every year, the Harlem-Roscoe Firefighter’s Association awards an area high school senior with $10,000 for their college education. This year’s winner is Hsing-Hao Louh. He was picked out of 30 applicants. All were required to fill out an application, submit a resume and several letters of recommendation before undergoing an interview process with the association’s board.

“It’s really exciting,” says Louh. “It feels great. It’s a huge privilege and they’ve provided me a great opportunity to continue my education to the best of my abilities and I’ll definitely study for myself, my future and them as well.”

Louh may attend Georgia Institute of Technology but is still waiting to hear from Duke and Berkeley. He wants to study bio-medical engineering.

Still & Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 3-26-17 (more)

This from Steve Redick:

Sunday evening, a massive industrial complex vacant and in disrepair. A rubbish type fire deep in the building produced smoke conditions that made interior operations very dangerous. This job took a few hours and required the use of search lines as well as TICs. Not much to see from the outside but some varying smoke conditions.

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

About 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening (3/26/17), Chicago firefighters responded for fire in a vacant structure at 6159 West Dickens Avenue  on the city’s Northwest Side. The response was soon raised to a box alarm.

By 10 p.m., the fire was struck out. One firefighter was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

This from José Guillén:

Here are a few cell phone camera shots of the Still & Box at the old Zenith TV and radio factory.  I grew up in the neighborhood and was visiting my parents when I caught wind of this going on. Thanks.

Chicago MVA with Haz Mat Level 1, 3-26-17

This from Steve Redick:

Took in an unusual response yesterday on the outbound JFK Expressway at Kimball. A semi truck struck the retaining wall and went over the side on an elevated portion of the roadway. The cab detached from the frame (which remained dangling over the lower roadway) and fell to the street below. The driver was reported as being pinned with both portions of the wreckage on fire.

The driver had been removed and was enroute to the hospital when I arrived. Reportedly he was not pinned, but as you might imagine seriously injured. I observed some of the recovery operations utilizing the large IDOT wrecker as well as a bit of the Lin-Mar wrecker operations. A haz mat response was also utilized due to leaking fuel and fluids on both the upper and lower portions of the incident.
