Downers Grove Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

Three people were hospitalized after a house fire early Saturday in west suburban Downers Grove.

Firefighters were called at 4 a.m. for reports of a fire in the two-story, single-family home in the 4000 block of Washington Street, according to a statement from the Downers Grove Fire Department. They arrived to find thick smoke and fire showing on two sides of the house.

A neighbor was trying to help a resident trapped at a second-floor window when firefighters arrived. They entered the home, but were not ale to take the person down the stairs because of the intensity of the fire. They instead performed a rescue from a window.

Three people were taken from the scene to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, although their conditions were not immediately known, according to the fire department. No firefighters were injured.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.

Spring Grove Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from the Chicagotribune.com:

Firefighters were called to a two-story frame house about 5:45 p.m. Friday in the 9800 block of Hunters Lane in Spring Grove according to Lt. Todd Robel of the Spring Grove Fire Protection District.

“They made entrance to the house and realized it had been burning” possibly for some time, said Robel.

Firefighters found one person dead on the dining room floor.  It took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the smoldering blaze. There was no evidence of foul play.

A Saturday autopsy determined Erik K. Whalen-Pedersen, 61, suffered smoke and soot inhalation, according to the McHenry County coroner’s office.

The victim lived there alone and was pronounced dead on the scene. There was evidence a cat also lived there but the pet was not located.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

As seen around …. Concord, NC

This from Jeff Harkey:

Hey guys,

Thought you might want to run these pics of this Smeal/LTI/Spartan 55’ Snorkel demo.  The unit appeared this week at the North Carolina Fire Chief’s Association Mid-Winter Conference in Concord, NC.

According to the Smeal dealer, this is the fourth unit produced so far, and carries #nn0004. The Frankfort unit was the first, and two additional rigs have been produced.

The dealer also mentioned that the Memphis, TN Fire Department will be receiving a future 55’ unit.

Sorry, but no info on what departments received units 002 or 003.

Take care,

Jeff
