Benefit for Elgin firefighter

Benefit for Elgin firefighter is today

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Tim Hinds returned from his mother’s funeral in February to find another tragedy had struck the family.

He had spoken with his wife, Joyce, several times in the few days he was out of town after his mother’s death. When she didn’t pick up the phone on the day he was heading back to their Rockford-area home, he wasn’t worried. He pulled into the garage and saw his wife sitting on the stoop inside their attached garage. It took him a few seconds to realize she wasn’t responding. His wife of 31 years, just 55 years old, had suffered a massive stroke.

Joyce Hinds has been hospitalized since the Feb. 23 stroke, her husband said. The stroke struck her brain’s centers for swallowing and speaking, as well as affecting her ability to walk, he said. While doctors have helped her regain her ability to eat and she was able to walk 20 feet recently with the help of a cane, Joyce Hinds hasn’t regained her ability to speak.

There have been other setbacks. Nerve pain leftover from the stroke has caused physical therapy to be a challenge. Once medication addressed the pain, his wife caught pneumonia, which she recently recovered from. Tim Hinds hopes to bring her home soon and had some help from the Elgin firefighters on that front.

Hinds is an engine driver at the Elgin Fire Department. Members of the Elgin Association of Firefighters Local 439 helped build a ramp to the house and installed other devices in the house to allow Joyce Hinds to come home.

The firefighters union is continuing to help, hosting a benefit for the Hinds family at 5 p.m. Saturday at Danny’s on Douglas, 231 Douglas Ave. in Elgin. For a $20 admission, attendees receive pizza, soda and one raffle ticket for baskets.

Tickets for other raffle baskets are $5 each, and a cash raffle — 3 tickets for $50 — enters guests to win $1,000, $500 or $250.

While insurance has paid for some of Joyce Hinds’ needs, her husband said, there are gaps. After the bout with pneumonia, which set back her physical therapy, the insurance company wanted to release her until she could start therapy again, he said.

The Hinds are paying out-of-pocket for Joyce to stay at the current rehab center in Niles to reduce the amount of moves necessary. Doctors are optimistic about her recovery, because of her young age and otherwise good health.

Hinds thanked his band of brothers at the Elgin Fire Department for their help in preparing for Joyce’s homecoming.

When Joyce was at the University of Wisconsin hospital, her husband told the staff that there were not a lot of family members to visit, but she would likely have “a whole bunch of brothers called firefighters, and they have been there for me. I can’t thank them enough,” Tim Hinds said.

thanks Dan

House fire in Lyons, 5-27-16

This from Drew Gresik:

Lyons companies had a working fire in a bungalow 5/27/16 at 4236 Leland Avenue. First engine had heavy smoke showing from the attic on arrival. Two lines were dropped, and the roof was opened by Riverside Truck 1629. Some birds were rescued during searches, and the fire appeared to be mostly in the attic. Great job by companies on scene.

South Elgin FPD to evaluate old fire station (more)

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

The South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District board swore in Jeff Theriault as its newest trustee in a special meeting Wednesday night, then proceeded to give Theriault a crash course in fire district budgets.

At the request of Fire Chief Bill Sohn, board member — and former South Elgin Fire Chief — Joe Cluchey provided much of the budgeting background information for the newest board member. The fire district had been without one board member — a county appointment — for more than a year.

He warned Theriault — a Schaumburg police detective who lives in South Elgin — that it will take at least a year of the monthly board meetings to completely understand the department’s budget and funding mechanisms.

Asst. Chief Steve Wascher presented the 2016-17 budget proposal. The district’s fiscal year begins June 1.

Total estimated income for the district for next year sits at $6.4 million — with the bulk coming from property taxes — with a capital expense budget of $4.1 million. The remainder of income goes toward personnel costs.

The district also has about $2 million in its building fund contingency — set aside for future replacement of the fire station at 150 State St. Sarah Dring, of Chicago-based 222 Architects, said last fall that basic fixes and remodeling for the building could reach $1.4 million. Current estimates put the station’s replacement cost at a minimum of $5 million, Wascher said.

In 2000, the district built the station in the Thornwood subdivision on Bowes Road for $2.5 million.

Although the old fire station is in poor shape, the budget does call for $50,000 toward redoing the concrete apron outside the north side of the fire bay doors. The area is sinking into the ground, causing unsafe conditions for firefighters and the public.

South Elgin fire is also waiting to see if it will receive a $400,000 federal grant to upgrade its radio system to StarCom, the satellite-based radio system used by Elgin police and fire. The South Elgin and Countryside fire district is dispatched through the Elgin 911 Center.

That grant, if approved, would provide the infrastructure, radios and base stations needed by South Elgin, Wascher said.

The board also approved some land acquisition from the Fox River and Countryside Fire Protection District.

A few parcels including the Five Islands Park subdivision just south of Vasa Park, a sliver of land in the Thornwood subdivision, and 20 or 30 lots in the Lafarge Fox River Quarry backing up to Randall Road. Those lots are now part of the quarry’s water retention area on the far west side of the property and are only accessible through the quarry or by rappelling down the side of the quarry.

Those parcels were improperly recorded in the late 1970s, Sohn said. Transferring the land into South Elgin brings about $4,000 more in annual taxes to the district, he said.

thanks Dennis

Chicago firefighters to receive PETA award

Excerpts from dnainfo.com:

On May 6, Chicago firefighters rescued a 5-year-old Chihuahua whose foot was stuck in his family’s bathtub drain on the Northwest Side. It took two hours for a crew of 16 people to cut through the ceiling in the apartment below and free the dog, PETA (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals) said.

PETA made the announcement Monday that Chief Mark Altman, Battalion 8, Engine 76, Truck 35, and Squad 2 will receive their Compassionate Fire Department Award.

“Chicago’s bravest are also Chicago’s kindest, as these firefighters didn’t stop working until this little dog was free from a stressful and painful situation,” says PETA Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their compassion and know-how will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”

The fire department will receive a framed certificate, a box of vegan cookies, and a copy of The Engine 2 Diet—a Texas firefighter’s 28-day plan for staying in shape by eating a plant-based diet.

thanks Dan
