There was a Chuck Goudie ABC “I Team” report on the 10 pm news which talked about the old 1985 “spare of a spare” rig last night. It was interesting as the beginning of the report contends that 40% of the rigs are too old to be in service. The story also claims that the National Fire Protection Association says that fire apparatus should be taken out of frontline service after 15 years of age and that the rigs should be totally retired after 25 years.
I don’t know when that changed because I had heard some time ago that 20 years should be the absolute maximum age in frontline service and another 5 to 10 years as a spare rig. Yes I know that most cities Chicago included do try to take rigs out of frontline service when they are less then 20 years old. Chicago, until a few years ago had been trying to take rigs out of frontline service when they were between 12 and 15 years old, however they had been falling behind and now there are a number of rigs that are between 15 and 20 years of age in frontline service. Either way the rigs are aging fast. At last count there is one 21 year old engine in frontline service, 5 engines that are 19 years old, 3 that are 18 years old, 2 that are 17 years old, and quite a few that are or are about to turn 15 years old.

When an rig is reassigned to another Company, does that rig go through a refurbishing or is it renumbered and back out on the street? Does Fleet or “Shops” do any refurbishment? Does the City farm that out?
