Streator receives land donation for training facility

Excerpts from mywebtimes.com:

A Streator couple signed an agreement Thursday with the city donating land for a public safety training facility.

The agreement, between the Jim and Marjorie Rhodes Estate and Streator, allows for 8.7 acres at the end of 10th Street to be used for fire and police training. Formal legal closing on the property is expected to take place within a few weeks.

“I think it’s good for the community, something to bring to Streator,” Jim Rhodes said after signing the agreement. “We worked ever since back in the ‘80s when we first opened (our business) — we always had fire and ambulance out there doing training. I think it’s a nice place they can call their own.”

The property is at Edson, Center and Wesley streets, which as part of the agreement, will be renamed Jim Rhodes Lane.

Streator Fire Chief Gary Bird said the facility will be built in phases over five years, with the first including site work and connection of electricity and water to the grounds.

He added that all the fire chiefs in the Southern La Salle County Northern Livingston County Fire Chiefs Association are aware of the training center coming to Streator and that it will be available for their use.

“Streator police, Grand Ridge Fire Department and Long Point Fire Department have committed to do some training,” Bird said. “Some instructors will be from the Streator Fire Department, and it also will likely be a host site for the Illinois Fire Service Institute. It’s our hope that we can offer classes from instructors across the country.”

thanks Dan

Fatal MVA on I-355, 3-27-16

From a reader:

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get pictures, however, I was listening to the fire radio at that time . Bolingbrook engine and medic 3 got there first. Lisle Woodridge engine 52, medic 51, battalion 51 and tower 53 were toned out shortly after Bolingbrook got on scene. Bolingbrook engine 5 was also on scene. The victim was announced DOA . ( medic 51 got canceled, and as a side note, lisle Woodridge had a ton of medical calls yesterday, so medic 52 was unavailable)

Excerpts from CBSChicago.com:

A 19-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on I-355 Sunday evening near southwest suburban Woodridge.

About 8:30 p.m., a 2002 GMC Envoy was traveling north on I-355 near 75th Street when it struck the right wall, rolled over several times and trapped the driver under it, according to Illinois State Police.

The driver, Adalberto Lopez, of Chicago, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:04 p.m., police said. He was the only occupant of the SUV and no other injuries were reported.

Cancer in the fire service

Excerpts from wtvq.com:

A representative from the Kentucky Governor’s Communications Office has said Governor Matt Bevin will sign the firefighter cancer bill into law.

On Monday the House passed Senate Bill 195, a proposal that will give families of firefighters who die from certain types of cancer, $80,000 as an in-the-line-of-duty death benefit. The bill has an emergency clause that would let it take effect immediately, which could benefit the families of those firefighters currently battling cancer.

One of those is Matt Logston of Lexington, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, shortly after fighting the Blue Grass Stockyards fire.  He is currently being treated in Chicago for stage-four cancer.

The family of retired Owensboro Battalion Chief David McCrady could also benefit.  He says in December of 2013, he had to stop doing the job he loves.  He was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, a fast-growing brain tumor.  Over the past few years McCrady has had surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and has been a part of a clinical trial.

Firefighters have spoken to both the House and Senate about scientific studies linking fighting fires to an increased risk of developing cancer.

House fire in Northfield, 3-26-16

This from Larry Shapiro:

Northfield firefighters were called to 2050 Norfolk Road this afternoon (3/26/16) for a reported brush fire that was encroaching on a house. First arriving companies found smoke from the attic and requested a full Code 3 response before upgrading to a working fire Code 4 with visible fire in the attic. Automatic and mutual aid units included engines from Northbrook, Winnetka, and Glencoe, trucks from Glenview, Wilmete, and Northbrook, plus Highland Park Squad 33. The rear of the house was damaged along with the attic above the garage. The fire was out within 20 minutes of the initial call for service.
