New law covering EMS providers

MyFoxChicago.com has an article about a new Illinois law that allows EMS providers to administer aid based on their level of certification as opposed to the care level of the unit to which they are assigned.

Emergency medical technicians in Illinois can now provide advanced life support even if they’re assigned to ambulance services designated for basic levels of care. The change is part of a new law meant to improve medical care in rural areas. It took effect Dec. 27.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon was among its backers and said Friday it will ensure EMTs can use all their skills to save lives. Previously, emergency responders were only permitted to provide services at their assigned ambulance level even if they had training to provide more advanced care.

Ambulance services are offered at levels ranging from basic life support to advanced life support and specialty care.

Gilson Republican Don Moffitt was the bill’s sponsor in the House. He says it will improve chances of saving lives.

Box alarm house fire in Prairie View 1-20-14

Lincolnshire-Riverwoods firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire last night at 20538 N. Clarice Avenue in unincorporated Lake County … surrounded by Buffalo Grove. While responding, the alarm was upgraded to a Code 4 for the working fire. The temperature was at 12 degrees and a steady, wind driven snow was falling as the first units arrived to find fire throughout the two-story house and two residents outside.

The husband was transported to an area hospital by Lincolnshire personnel, reportedly with smoke inhalation. The closest hydrant was frozen, and the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm as companies pulled lines and setup Lincolnshire Truck 53 for master stream operations.

Both Lincolnshire engines were pumping as well as Truck 53.  Mutual and auto-aid companies at the scene included Long Grove, Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Palatine, Northfield, and Grayslake.

Images here are from Sally Miller, a neighbor, and Larry Shapiro who arrived after the roof collapsed.
