Lansing FD update

Just wanted to share an update regarding Lansing‘s stations. At one point Lansing had 4 stations, but now they are down to 3. Station 1 located at the intersection of Lake ST & Henry ST has been shut down for good. At one point it housed a Mack CF pumper and 1 ambulance, and was staffed full time, just like the other 3 stations. After being placed out of service, it housed unit 7777, the MABAS 24 fire investigations unit. It was moved out when the station completely shut down. Station 4 on 170th ST next to the police station is now known as Station 1. It houses a tower ladder, 1 ambulance and the MABAS 24 investigator unit.

Since it seems I’ll never see a fire again as they have been virtually eliminated here in Chicago I got sentimental and wanted to share some classic old images I came across….

The first is a rare shot of a smoke ejector working .. this is way before the recent rebuilds … you can see the smoke issuing from the top of the unit where the fan discharge is …

Next one is squad 2 … (not FMS 2) but they were reusing the old squad rigs when we had a squad in each district and they only had a few of the Ford Welch units

A shot of truck 25 setting up a ladder pipe … can’t recall the location but I seem to remember it being a Chinese restaurant of some kind

Niles Truck 440 … this was in the 6300 block of Touhy, and ironically enough I took this photo standing on the front lawn of the house I would eventually buy …

Elk Grove Village, classic tiller .. gotta love a Mack Pirsch anything!!

Niles, IL buggy … I always liked the two Borealis lights, but these were the newer model, not the old classics we are all thinking of … cool none the less

Western Springs FD update

I got a nice shot of Western Springs Battalion buggy 1781 with its new and updated graphics to match the rest of the fleet. Feel free to use it to replace the older, outdated photo you guys have up on Western Springs page! They also have a new Ford F-250 pick-up (1782) and a x-PD Ford Crown Victoria (1783). I will attach those photos as well, but I’m not sure which stations those are housed at. Thanks again, guys.

Buffalo Grove water rescues 6-26-13

The heavy storms that went through the area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning dumping a huge amount of water in many suburbs caused widespread road closures and flooding. Area fire departments were called to help motorists stranded in standing water as well as residents that could not leave their homes.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department requested a MABAS Box Alarm from within divisions 1 and 4 for swift water rescue techs and boats to help residents on St. Mary’s Parkway between Raupp Boulevard and Lincoln Terrace. Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville and Mount Prospect responded with techs and boats in addition to techs from a handful of other neighboring departments.

Larry Shapiro submitted images and a video (forthcoming) from the Buffalo Grove incident.

Plane crash in Wheeling 6-25-13

The first of several posts about a plane that went down on Wolf Road, in Wheeling, 1/2 mile north of Chicago Executive Airport.

From the Chicago Tribune:

A twin-engine plane crashed near an apartment complex as it was attempting to land at the Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling this evening but there were no injuries to anyone on the ground, officials said.

The crash happened at about 8:28 p.m. near the intersection of Hintz Road and Wolf Road, police said. The plane landed nearly about four tenths of a mile from the Foxboro North Apartments, police said.

According to Federal Aviation Administration officials, the twin-engine Beechcraft 20 plane crashed just north of the airport, said Tony Molinaro, an FAA spokesman.

The pilot was the only person on the plane and sustained minor injuries, Molinaro said. The aircraft sustained some damage, Molinaro said.
