WEST UNION, Ill. — A West Union, Ill. volunteer firefighter was killed Saturday evening while doing his job.

Firefighter Lance Stone, a husband and father of five young children, died while driving on his way to a fire in the Darwin area of Clark County near the Wabash River after 8 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re all devastated by it,” said Fire Chief Bill Crumrin of the West Union Volunteer Fire Department. West Union is a small community about 13 miles south of Marshall.

Stone was alone and driving to a fire that had been reported in Darwin, which is about eight miles from West Union.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the scene of the crash about 8:51 p.m., according to the department. When deputies arrived, they found the vehicle Stone had been driving had left the roadway, ejecting the driver who was pronounced dead at the scene.
